My son is a network administrator. He taught me a few things that have reduced my computer stress levels to near zero. One of them is to create multiple accounts in Windows.
You should create a new account and give it Administrator privileges. Give it a good password and don't forget or lose the password.
The account you are now using, with all the programs you've installed and all your files is probably set up with Administrator privileges. It shouldn't.
You should change this account to "Limited." This prevents viruses and spyware from invading your computer and installing itself on your computer. It also prevents you from installing new software on your computer. You will need to go back into the control panel and change your account back to "Administrator", install the software, then change the account back to "Limited."
For those of you whose computers have slowed down to a crawl, the reason is, you have a couple of dozen spyware programs running in the background. You can download a good anti-spyware program for free, but that is another subject.
For those interested in changing their accounts from Administrator to Limited, the steps are most of this is from memory):
click the Start button
click Control panel
double click the User Accounts icon
click create a new account
follow the steps for making a new account
give that account Administrative privileges
click on Modify an existing account
click on your account
select "Limited" (at the top)
click OK
While you are here, give your account a good password, write it down and remember it.
close everything up
next time you log on with your account, you will have Limited privileges.
the new account will be listed in your login screen.
