Part way through my manuscript there is a block of several pages that are indented on the right. I didn't issue the command, and I don't know why it's suddenly there in just one part. The ms is continuous with no section breaks.

If I do it line by line, I can move the little slider thingy on the ruler bar, but only to close to the right margin. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the indent command please?

If all else fails...

Copy/paste the affected text into Notepad.

Delete the affected text in MS Word, including any blank lines above and below, so you catch the (invisible) control characters causing the right indent.

Copy/paste the text back from Notepad into MS Word.

Fingers crossed and all that.

Try highlighting those pages and holding down the control key then hitting the 'L' key. This will give left indentation. I've had times when the word-processing software does its own thing. Very annoying! Good luck.

Gah! I just typed out a big reply but it didn't go in and I can't get it on my back button. Perhaps this proves my IT skills are bad and I shouldn't make a suggestion.

But, I do know how to fix it.

The problem lies in the paragraph style. At the moment, your style probably says it's name, and other info (eg: "Normal+indent"). You need to reset it to just Normal (or whatever the style is you're using in the other paragraphs).

Alternatively, you can use the "Paste Formatting" tool (not the standard Paste tool). Click somewhere in a paragraph that appears the way you want it to, then double-click on the Paste Formatting tool. Click once on each of the paragraphs that's indented. This should do the trick quickly and easily.

Don't forget to turn your clock back!

I can't find a paste formatting tool for option two, but option one worked.

Thanks loads, April.

No problems, glad it worked.

I just checked and it's actually called "Format Painter" and it's a paintbrush icon on the Standard toolbar, right next to the "Paste" tool....at least it is on a Mac...

This is a very handy tool I encourage everyone to try out!
