I don't know what it is that other people taste when they drink Diet Coke, but I'm pretty sure it's not what I'm tasting. This is not a taste that I could acquire, period. From a flavor standpoint I'd honestly rather drink gasoline.

I remember when George Bush I got elected, he decreed that there would be no broccoli served in the White House. ("First my Mom made me eat it, then I had to eat it in the Army(?), then I had it at fundraiser dinners. Well, now I'm President and I'm not eating it any more.") One of the newspapers ran an article about how some percentage of the population has a biochemistry quirk that makes broccoli taste insanely bitter to them.

I'm fairly sure I've got something similar going on with Diet Coke. It is inconceivable to me that people who taste what I'm tasting when they drink that stuff would volutarily continue to do so.

Are there any flavors so repulsive to you that you're pretty sure other people who eat it are tasting something else?

Also, any medical types out there care to weigh in? I'm curious.

I wonder if you're a supertaster.

Yes. Gorgonzola cheese tastes like composted old tennis shoes to me with a strong bouquet of roadkill, but my foodie friends all want to court and marry it.

Scott, is it the "Coke" part, or the diet part, the sugar substitute? Can you drink and enjoy other things with the same sweetner?

It's the aspartame. NutraSweet hits me the same way. For comparison, I'm not crazy about the other artificial sweeteners like Splenda and Sweet'N Low, but they're not unendurable the way aspartame is.

A couple years back Diet Coke started offering a Splenda-flavored version. Just for grins I tried that one and, while not my preference, it was completely drinkable.

I took the test a while back. Nope, just a regular taster.

Mmmmm. Yummy gorgonzola. But--point of order--I think it's the Normandy camembert that's normally described as composted tennis shoes. Most critics agree that Gorgonzola has more of a Times Square porno theater aroma.

I LOVE Diet Coke. . .but I'd rather Diet Pepsi. But I'll drink anything "diet." Regular (meaning non-diet) pop is yucky and it tastes like I'm drinking syrup.

Ick. No diet anything for me. And not because of the taste of the artificial sweeteners, but because they're artificial. I'd rather have real sugar.

No broccoli either, if it's cooked. If I'm gonna eat anything from that family of veg it has to be raw. I can't stand the taste or the smell. I made cabbage rolls for The Man once. Once. Smelled that shit for a week. *gag*

I second to drinking gasoline though I feel any brand of Coke is very closely connected to gasoline anyway, so I'd have to pass out just before taking that round of taste. It does feel like Coca Cola is an integration of the modern times, and it just feels 'cool' to drink it. There is so many different varieties of Coke now. I don't feel there is any difference in them-just a hint of change in the ingredients here and there. I don't like the taste or smell of man-made products which are produced in a laboratory as they are not healthy for the mind or body and do tamper with it. (I know from experience and observance)

Spinach. It literally makes me vomit 9 times out of 10 just because of the taste (I'm not allergic).

Also, I'm one of those people who drinks Diet Coke somewhat often, and I can say that I understand how people may not like it, but you may have some abnormal taste receptors or something.
