On Aug. 3, 1492, Columbus sailed from Spain in search of a route to the Indies across the Atlantic Ocean. On October 12, he reached an island that he called San Salvador. For many years, historians believed that Columbus's first landing took place on present-day San Salvador, shown on this map. But today, scholars do not agree on the exact site of this landing.

Very cool! I love Columbus. A few years ago I read three or four different biographies on him. One of the reasons he's so interesting is because we really don't know that much about him. One of the books I read (don't remember the title) actually made the argument that Columbus likely DID know that the world was a whole lot bigger than the size he said when he pitched the project. In fact, he "fixed" the numbers to make the venture seem more possible.

very shrewd of him to make the voyage seem more feasible by underestimating the versts.

neat little stone chapel :-)
Also an interesting painting of Christ off cross.
Looks like it's set in an interior, with Mary holding Him, on a couch?
