:) Hi folks!

First, we ask that you not criticize low payment rates as it is against our rules (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31330). Any posts containing complaints and criticisms of pay rates may be deleted without notice.
Second, we are implementing a new pay rate system for thread titles (as of May 2010). Mods will be add the following information as time and energy allow:

-- non-paying would be
(and those fractional-cent deals might as well be non-paying)
-- Token [**] might be from a quarter-cent a word to a penny a word
-- unknown [***] might be royalty-only (some quite-respectable small presses are royalty-only
-- semi-pro [****] might be from one to four cents a word
--and pro [*****] might be five cents a word and up

Third, when posting a paying market here, PLEASE state the rate in the title of your thread, preferably something along these lines:

Subject of thread [Payment: $50 per 50 words]

Just a reminder, due to some recent job postings, writers should not pay for a writing job! In Uncle Jim's (James McDonald's) words:

Money always flows toward the writer. Alternate version: The only place an author should sign a check is on the back, when they endorse it.

If you're wondering why a thread or post you made has been moved, read on. I've noticed that lately this forum has taken a bit of a turn from what its original purpose was. On the main page for AW, under "Paying Markets" it says:

Editors, please post paying opportunities for writers here. (Pay rates & terms must be listed, especially if a company itself is posting a lead. If a member is posting a lead they received secondhand, it is permissible that they may not know the pay rate & terms.)

* This includes legitimate paying opportunities that members may know of. If in doubt, feel free to post your market here, and if need be I will move it.

It's fine to chit-chat in some of the threads, because it can help warn or encourage others about good and not-so-good markets that have been listed. However, the original intention of this forum was for editors and markets to post opportunities here, sort of a "classified section" for writers. Please, if you have a special goal that you've met, or an accomplishment, rather than starting a new thread about it here, share it in the Goals & Accomplishments (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=31) forum.

Now, I mean no offense. I'm grateful that we have such helpful members posting such things! I just know that some of these posts would be viewed and responded to more in other forums. :)

There have been a few threads that have been a bit off-topic lately, more concerning questions or rants by members about particular markets. Those would be better off in the Freelance Writing forum (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=3), in most cases, as you will get a lot more responses there. There have also been a few "I did it!" type threads, which would probably be more appropriate in the Goals & Accomplishments forum (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=31), Announcements forum (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=34), or Office Party forum (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=29). Some posts I've seen have included introductions, and those posts will fare better in the Newbie forum (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27).

A few helpful members have posted threads and/or lists of other questionable/generic recommended markets. As welcome as those are, they'd also be appropriate for the N (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=21)etworking/Sharing Leads forum (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=21), and/OR I've created a sticky thread (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11586) at the top of this forum specifically for those of you who recommend markets. Please post markets there (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11586), and I will update the list as you comment with markets.

I will try to move these threads and posts to where they will be most appropriate, but if you think your thread needs to be relocated somewhere, just let me know. :)

Thanks so much everyone!

ETA:

Writers, if you've found a paying writing opportunity that you wish to share, please do so in either this forum (Paying Markets) or the Networking: Sharing Leads forum. The description for that forum is as follows:

Networking: Sharing Leads (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=21)
Writers, swap market info here-- guidelines, contact info, publishing news and changes.

This Paying Markets description is:

Writers Wanted: Paying Markets (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=24)
Editors, please post paying opportunities for writers here.

* Once again, this includes legitimate paying opportunities that any member may know of directly from an editor or publication. If in doubt (regarding legitimacy), feel free to post your market here, and if need be I will move it.

Lastly, writers, if you have something you wish to discuss with other Freelancers, such as questions about a market, or concerns about a query being unanswered, please do so in the Freelance Writing forum (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=3).

Thank you! :)
