I've just had to spell Massachusetts twice for something here at work and I can't do it without the song in my head:

M-A-double S-A-C-H-U-S-E-double T-S. That's Massachusetts

I also learned Mississippi:

M-
I-
S-S-
I-
S-S-
I-
P-P
I

another very important lesson learned from the Captain: How to say No.
N
O
Spells NO
I said that to a bus driver once at school; I forget what he asked me but I was very assertive in my SPELLS NO.

The one thing I learned from the Captain was never to trust a moose with ping pong balls.

I remember from long ago how to spell Mississippi:

M-
I-
crooked letter-crooked letter-
I-
crooked letter-crooked letter-
I-
humpback-humpback-
I

Amazing the silly things you remember that turn out to be useful :)

Yeah, we had a relative from there spell it like that and all us Yanks just sort of stared at her and nodded knowingly.

You know, I can't remember anything from Capt. Kangaroo - other than the characters, Mr. GreenJeans, Bunny Rabbit, etc. - other than how to spell Massachusetts and Mississippi. I have a vague memory of a song played against a black screen with white-gloved hands - that's it!
And of course, how to say NO.

shh... I'm thinking...
I have no pressing memories of learned things from the Captain, but my five-year-old's kindergarten class watched one of his shows the second week of school. So he's still got it.

I have warm fuzzy feelings associated which the Captain. The only thing I really remember is Mr Moose & his ping pong balls, Grandfather Clock, and that super creepy looking Dancing Bear.

Cheers!

Never mess with Mr. Greenjeans. And Captain Kangaroo had some scary hair.

That's all I learned.

And the clock with the face that had eyes that moved.

I remember that the Captain used to have kids come on the show and they did crafts. He always had tape and glue and colorful (in my black and white TV mind's eye) paper and kid-sized scissors. For some reason it seemed we didn't keep those things at home so I was wide-eyed when he brought out the craft stuff.

I hate crafts now.

I was having my 7th birthday and my mom got me and a friend on the CK show. Turned out to be a bust because we passed the room the magician had his gear in and a rabbit was in a cage. So it was kind of obvious what was going to come from the hat :(

Before they enacted the legislation that put all of Indiana on Daylight Saving Time, I lived in the part that didn't change time. Programming came on an hour later than usual.

I hated the TV schedule changing. During the winter, we couldn't watch Captain Kangaroo before going to school. Instead, we got to see crappy AM America, the predecessor to Good Morning America.

Well, when GMA came about, I learned who Rona Barrett was. I know. Big consolation.
