Did anyone happen to read today's Featured Article on the Writer'sDigest.com website -- "Escaping the Slushpile?" If so, what do you think about it? I thought it was kind of strange.

Sorry, but for some reason I can't seem to display the link. However, put writersdigest.com in your search site and click "go." From the page that appears you will find the link near or at the beginning -- click on.

A recent article topic was "What Agents Hate." Even if you're not seeking representation right now, it's still a humorous article to read.

Link

This was much more helpful. I especially liked what this agent said:
“In romance, I can’t stand this scenario: A woman is awakened to find a strange man in her bedroom—and then automatically finds him attractive. I’m sorry, but if I awoke to a strange man in my bedroom, I’d be reaching for a weapon—not admiring the view.”

If the author was trying to be funny...

then he missed the target by a couple of miles. On the other hand, if he was serious... well, that's one more reason not to read crap.

:Wha:

I think that someone has an over-inflated opinion of his own sense of humor.

I'm glad the article on slush-piles is trying to be funny. I took it seriously until the whole giving socks with submissions thing. I actually read in Writer's Market that it is one of the worst things you could do.

I already followed the rules of Know the Company and Priority Mail, since that just comes with the WIP being important to me.

I found "What Agents Hate" much more helpful, although many of the things they listed I actually like to do in my writing. :(

I took the article as all of you did -- unfunny humor. However, I then said: "Wait, am I maybe missing something? After all, this was sanctioned by Writer's Digest."

Thanks for letting me know I'm not 100% nuts.

I read writing magazines for good, solid information on how to write, market manuscripts, etc....NOT for juvenile attempts at humor. And I really can picture some poor souls taking it seriously.

Anyone else find WD just isn't as a good a magazine as it used to be? Or maybe I've just learned enough that I know what's grain and what's chaf?

It's really not as good as it used to be, years ago. I think they ran out of ideas for new and interesting articles a long time ago, so they use a lot of mediocre filler. I rarely find anything worthwhile anymore.

The Writer is still good, and I occasionally buy Writers Journal although a lot of their pages are taken up with contest winners. Still, every now and then they have something very worthwhile.
