I like mine smooth mixed with cream, butter and garlic. If they had lumps I wouldn't complain though.:D

Lumpy or smooth. It doesn't matter how they are spread on Orlando Bloom as long as I get to lick them off. :)

Lumps. Lets you know they're real and not from flakes, buds or powder. Kudos to Hometown Buffet for lumpy mashed potatoes.

Twice baked.

Bake whole potatoes, scoop out insides, mash the insides with green onions, sour cream, etc.. then stuff them back into the skins. Cover them with cheese, and put them back into the oven. When they are finished, you get a melted crust of cheese over a cloud of yummy potato goodness. Mmmm....

Orlando and I eat them all the time. ;)

Finally something I can honestly answer "with Orlando Bloom!" I like them smooth, with garlic and lots of salt. If we're going all out, add a bit of sour cream too. :)

Peel, boil in salted water for 20mins, drain, mash smooth, add generous dollops of butter, cover pot with lid for a couple of minutes, whip melted butter into potatoes with wooden spoon, consume.

Unpeeled, lumpy or smooth, thick, with butter, salt, and on Daniel Craig, forget Orlando.

If you want to make it better, Daniel better be peeled. ;-)

Or with chopped smoky bacon fried with chives then mixed in with the potato mash and the shells restuffed. If the cheese on top is thin slices of parmesan it makes a crust.

But I prefer equal quantities of potatoes and sweet potatoes with some pumpkin. Steamed (never boiled - you throw away the goodness with the water unless you use it in bread making) then mashed.

Or the Irish Way (Colcannon):

3 pounds potatoes, scrubbed
2 sticks butter
1 1/4 cups hot whole milk (I like a combo of milk and cream)
1 head cabbage, cored chopped
1 pound cooked ham cubes or crumbled bacon
3-4 green onions, chopped
Chopped parsley (flat leaf), for garnish
Salt and fresh black pepper, to taste

Peal, cube and cook potatoes. Mash thoroughly to remove all the lumps. Add 1 stick of butter in pieces. Gradually add hot milk, stirring all the time. Season with a few grinds of black pepper.

While the potatoes are cooking, boil the cabbage in unsalted water until it's tender. Add 2 tablespoons butter. Cover with lid for 2 minutes. Drain toroughly before returning it to the pan.

Add cabbage, scallions, and ham to mashed potatoes, stirring them in gently. Serve by plopping a big ol' serving on the plate and putting a chunk of softened butter into an indentation in the top. Sprinkle with parsley.

Cooked with butter ad a bit of mayonnaise.

It's odd as I think mayonnaise is one of the most disgusting things on the planet. But I make an exception in mashed potatoes. You can't really taste ti in them though. It gets them a a bit creamier.

Lumpy. As stated above, you'll know they aren't instant.

Lots of gravy, some garlic, and black pepper, please.

I'm old school: just butter and milk. I don't care if they are lumpy or smooth, as long as they don't have anything weird mixed in. Unless it's cabbage. Mashed potatoes and cooked cabbage are very tasty.

I like them smashed--boil them with the peel on, then mash them. SO much easier, and there's a lot of vitamin B6 in the peel. I did this for Thanksgiving with milk, butter, a little garlic and chives, and no one has asked for mashed potatoes since.

Ten Russet potatoes skin on
Cut into small pieces
boil
smash

Add 1 stick of butter (real butter)
Add milk I think I put in about a cup or so. I don't really measure that.
Garlic powder
Salt
Pepper

Serve as is or with gravy. I like making pork gravy and eating it with pork chops.

And I like them with just butter.

Too much butter (real butter), S&P, maybe sour cream or cream cheese if we feel like tossing it in, and milk (we only use skim at our house). Mix really well, but leave some of those lumpies.

And, even though I make awesome mashed potatoes, my number one comfort food is KFC mashed potatoes and gravy. If I've been sick and I'm starting to feel better, I beg for KFC mashed taters and gravy. That's when we all know Vixey's getting better!

I don't care about the texture as long as they're real! I make mine with butter and evaporated milk - for extra decadence - and salt and pepper.

About half a pan of mashed potatoes, with about half a stick of butter, about a quarter cup of milk and about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of sour cream. Top with grated cheddar, salt, pepper, and chives.

Most of the time we make instant potatoes (I make it with cream or vegetable stock and lots of herbs so they taste great). I don't like lumps and it stems from an incident when I was a kid. My mom made mashed potatoes and apparently a big black ant got into them and she inadvertantly cut him in pieces. I just happen to get one of those pieces when I went to eat them. I was probably ten or so. For many years, I wouldn't TOUCH mashed potatoes.

Now, I laugh at that incident.

So whenever I make mashed potatoes I prefer them smooth, no lumps and LOTS of other stuff with them.

I quite like carrots and parnips in mashed potatoes, or any sort of vegetable. I tried this once, and it was sweet but delicious. I like it the long cooking way, on a pot. It is rare for me to have mashed potatoes though, the Portuguese culture doesn't eat mashed potatoes. Though the British does, I don't have any frequent moments of eating mashed potato. I think once a year happens is about right for me, for eating mashed potatoes or even lesser than that. Oh yes, and I like it without any lumps, just smooth.

I finally changed my method of making mashed potatoes, and the improvement of flavor was a revelation:

Scrub and cook whole russet (baking) potatoes, skin on, in salted water.
Drain well and let cool a few moments only.
Holding each hot potato in a potholder, peel off skin with small paring knife...much easier than peeling first.
Using hand-held masher, add soft butter, salt and pepper to taste, then add hot milk or cream.

Yowza!

Don't peel them.

Just chop 'em up and boil in water until they go soft.
drain and mash. The only lumps should be the bits of skin.
Add about this much butter and a good scoosh of milk.
Mash again.

I scoop the flesh out of baked Idaho potatoes, then I mash it and add chopped red pepper and minced garlic that has been sauteÚd in olive oil. Then I add in grated havarti cheese and salad shrimps and mix well. I stuff the mixture in the jackets and brown in the oven. It's delicious! (also impresses the hell out of guests at dinner parties)

Lumpy, but little soft lumps that practically melt in your mouth.

I do like bacon, sour cream, cheese, and all that sort of stuff, but usually it's shredded cheese and green onions as a topping for me. That's my fave.

Freshly dug, baby red potatoes, boiled with the skin on. Smash with an old-fashioned potato masher and add organic whole milk, butter, salt, black pepper and a blop of sour cream.

ok, I'm off to the kitchen now.
