Hubby and I are re-watching NYPD Blue. We're Californians, and we have one burning question: do blue-collar people in New York REALLY talk like that? Or is this just particular to the show? What I'm referring to is not at all the accent - it's the particular way language is used on the show. They have some really unique phrases (for example, the word "type" is used frequently in a non-standard way - "He has those type concerns"). It's almost like they have their own grammar.

Any New Yorkers who can satiate our curiosity?

Also a Californian, I have debated with New Yorkers, who refuse to concede the visual nuance, the difference, between standing in line (California) and standing on line(NY). Vertically and horizontally challenged?

Taking a haircut in NY as opposed to getting a haircut in California.

NYspeak has long since affected Hollywood --taking a meeting, taking lunch.

Like a bowel movement, where would one take a haircut?
