Are you?

'Cause I sure am, in fact, I'm richer than 89% of the world's population. Makes you think, doesn't it?

My son will be getting a disability allowance soon of about $750 a month, because he's autistic and will never be able to work. That will put him in the top 14% of the world's population as far as income.

According to this, we're in the top 9%. According the the US Poverty guideline, we're just barely over the line for a family of four.

Top 0.33%? WTF?

This thing is rigged.

No, it's not. It just includes everyone in the world, not just those in developed countries. Far too many people exist on less than a dollar a day.

And can I borrow some cash, Ray?

Anyone who lives in a first-world nation is rich. To survive in a first-world nation, you HAVE to be rich by the world's standards. There's simply no comparison between first and third worlds. That's why they're different "worlds."

Which is not to say we aren't hugely fortunate for all the resources we have. Even if we're living paycheck to paycheck we can still go to a public library and use the internet. Meanwhile, in some places around the world, people have never even seen a computer.

As for me:
You are the 429,712,644 richest person in the world!

I'm in the top 7.16%. Think I'll be staring in the next version of The Apprentice (I know, spelling....) anytime soon? "Okay, you are like, so fired!"

ETA - I'm just being flippant. Forgive me :)

Yeah, but they also don't spend $4.25 on a latte. I think they need to have another test for cost of living, or at least do it by networth and the relative cost of living.

I mean, sure, if I move to rural China now I'd live like a mountain king. But where TF is my latte?

I'm 696,829,616th - in the top 11.61%.
It doesn't take account of assets and liabilities though, which my income is trying to keep the right way round.

OOh. Maybe it's a hoax to target the IP addresses of all the people telling it what their income is???

So, was it wrong for me to type in $123,456,789?

Plus I'm at Starbucks now. Not in (rural) Beijing, though.

When I typed in my husband's income it turns out we're quite rich. (by the standards of the scale.)

When I typed in MY measly little pathetic starving writer income, it turns out I'm still rich. I kinda like that!
