Cybele May, the founder of the candy review Web site Candy Blog, said that in recent years rising cocoa prices have led candy companies like Hershey's -- the maker of Take 5 and the top chocolate-seller in the U.S. -- to replace cocoa butter with cheaper vegetable oils. The ingredients list for Take 5, for instance, now includes "palm, shea, sunflower and/or safflower oil."

Cocoa butter is fat derived from cocoa beans. Like other commodities, cocoa prices have skyrocketed in recent years. In 2006, one metric ton of African cocoa butter cost less than $4,000. Today, it costs more than $8,100, according to Judy Ganes, the president of J. Ganes Consulting in Katonah, New York.

As a chocoholic, as long as the flavor is as delicious as evah, I'm ok with it.

Well that's one thing I'm NOT going to give up! :)

*shrugs* Those candies tastes as wonderful as they ever did. Better they change a minor ingredient to save money then to jack up the prices outrageously or worse, shrink the candy bar's size down.

And now you know why I like Green & Black's Organic (http://www.greenandblacks.com/us/home.html), with a tagline like:

As Chocolate As Humanly Possible.

Mmmmmmm.

Some will tell you I'll actually eat Hershey's when offered. Don't listen to them. I'm a snob to the core ;) And I'm sad to be losing you, Ed. I thought we had something special together...

(Listen, when you're only eating 12-1500 calories a day, you have to make EVERY SINGLE STINKING ONE COUNT!)

mbfthl bmth.

Oh, well, if it's a diet thing and you're limiting yourself, then OK. Yes, eat the best.

I'm cheap though. I'll buy whatever chocolate catches my eye in the checkout line.

I had a Hershey's bar last night and it tasted as good to me as it always has. . .and it was only $0.33. . .I have no complaints.

I like candy bars, Snickers, O Henry and the like, but I LOVE real chocolate. You know, the dark stuff made with real cocoa (70% is my fave). I won't give it up. I'll find a way to keep chocolate in my budget.

My real favorite is a Three Musketeers bar. I'll have to go buy one or five after work, just as an experiment, mind you, to see if they changed any.

Well, drat! You guys flung a craving on me so I went to our candy machine and bought a Hershey's with Almond, and wouldn't you know the luck?

It's got cocoa butter in it!

*sigh*

But, I'll force myself to eat it anyway.

I'm a bit of a chocolate snob. Oh, I'll eat a candy bar if you put one in front of me, but nothing compares to real, dark Swiss chocolate.

And I've got a feeling that replacing the cocoa with something cheaper won't give you the health benefits (http://chinesefood.about.com/od/westernhol/a/chocolate.htm) that real chocolate does.

So pass the real stuff, Sara.

They're only replacing the cocoa butter, not the cocoa itself. I think it's a moisture thing and probably has little to do with taste.

Interesting though, the article says that without the cocoa butter they can't call it chocolate anymore and have to say chocolatey, or chocolate candy.

sweet.

Wal-Mart still doesn't have them. (Or half of anything else I went to get.)
2oz. bag at the speciality shop is ~5 bucks ... well. That's just lunch. What about dessert? ;)

Thankx. :D

Sorry Ed. I still wuv you though.
