I thought "double dutch" was when you go on a date and pay for the dinner of the person at the next table...

"double dutch" in reference to dating is when each person pays for their own date love.
It is also a type of rope jumping.

I never got the hang of jumping double dutch. I couldn't even stand in, never mind running in. Just too uncoordinated, I guess. I had to turn the rope instead. Mine was a sad childhood...

Yes, but now you have a mouth full of whipped cream.

Double dutch is gibbererish

Going dutch is splitting the date expenses

So what is double dutch rope jumping? Do you all fall over or something?

Never went dutch on a date and never really skipped rope either. I preferred hockey in the driveway with my big brother and his friends...or football. It's fun to make boys cry :D

I often cried when my date wouldn't go dutch.

Double dutch--two ropes being swung at the same time, usually in opposite directions, by a team of two people. Usually accompanied by chants/tunes/etc sung by the twirlers and the skippers (not technical terms for the positions that I know of, BTW). Very very cool when done properly.

I was really good at skipping rope. I could go in backwards!!
But the double dutch thing ... that was tough.
Oh, the memories. I can see us on the playground at lunch, choosing who we wanted to jump rope with us.
I forget the songs, though. Anyone remember the songs?

Here are some skipping songs:

All in together girls,
Never mind the weather girls.
Put your coats and hats on.
Tell your mothers you won't be home.
I was born in January, February, March ...
(the skipper would then jump out of the rope on the appropriate month).

Bluebells, cockle shells, eevy ivy over! (turning the rope only half way, then over on over to continue)
My mother sent me to the store
And this is what she sent me for:
Salt,
Vinegar,
Peppers!
(The enders turn the rope fast while everyone counts to see who can skip the longest.)

Fudge! Fudge! Call the judge!
Momma's got a new born baby!
Ain't no girl, ain't no boy, just a plain ole baby.
Wrap it up in tissue paper, send it down the elevator,
First floor miss (step on rope) second floor miss (step on rope)
Third floor, better not miss!
(Spell your name while skipping on one foot.)

Girl guide, girl guide, dressed in blue,
These are the actions you must do:
Stand at attention, stand at ease,
Bend your elbows, bend your knees.

Salute to the captain, bow to the Queen,
Turn your back on the dirty submarine.
I can do the heel and toe, I can do the splits.
I can do the hootchy-kootchy, just like this.

Curious: what do you call it?

skipping

There are probably different terms for different styles ( I think what you call double dutch we call double skipping - but I could be wrong - I haven't skipped in *cough* years)

As I said, here double dutch just means gibberish

That's great! I think I remember bluebells, cockle shells, but the rest sparks no memory.
Maybe it's a regional thing?
