I've browsed Amazon for days but it's hard to know what's worth buying. Are there any psychologists around with suggestions of serious resources on:
  • Basic psychology (a little bit of everything)
  • Basic sociology
  • Psychology of lying
  • Psychology of crime / criminology
  • Manipulation, persuasion
Any help would be much appreciated. I have access to many peer reviewed journals if necessary.

Also any resources on frauds, scams, cons would be great. Anything about not telling the truth, fooling other people.

I am not a psychologist, but I have written mysteries, and one incredibly helpful book is Richard Rhodes's Why They Kill: The Discoveries of a Maverick Criminologist, which presents the work of Lonnie H. Athens in a very eloquent and accessible way.

Is it all about murder or does it have material on other types of crimes?

I found the book Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of Psychopaths Among Us by Robert D. Hare useful, as well as his follow-up on workplace psychopaths Snakes in Suits.

Thanks! It seems interesting, especially Snakes in Suits.
