What does the interior of a lizard's mouth look like? I'm pretty familiar with snakes and it seems they all have perfectly white mouths (that I've seen, anyway). I can't seem to find any good pictures of alligators' or lizards' mouths, though. I ask because I'm about to start a story with dragon-like lizards (about the size of horses) and I want them to be as realistic as I can under the circumstances. Any herpetologists or reptile enthusiasts out there who can help me? Thanks!

If you type lizard mouth into google and then click images you'll get tons, some clearer than others. You might also go to a zoo around feeding time :)

Also, notice that the teeth are very primitive- little sharp pegs :)

Robert's post is a great place to start, but it should be noted that 'lizard' covers a pretty broad range of territory. Pink mouths are pretty common, but black, blue, purple and white are also out there.

Are your dragon-like lizards fire breathers? Are they carnivores, herbivores or omnivores? Are they active in the day, the night or the inbetween parts?

Whatever you want them to do, here's a bunch more pictures of lizard mouths.

(Another I can't identify, though it looks related to iguanas; but uromastyx look related to chuckwallahs and they aren't, so)

... And that should be a good place to start. :)

Wow, thanks everyone!

My dragons are not fire-breathing (they're not magical) and are carnivorous. I suppose they're more like dinosaurs than the typical fantasy dragon, although they are intelligent. I want to make them as realistic as I can.

So it looks like I can make the insides of their mouths pretty much any color I like. Thanks again!
