I remember these "Safety First!" programs (book covers, maybe some other swag/stuff) in elementary school, but I didn't understand it, or what the big deal was...

The duck and cover looks like something from the 50s.

I remember duck and cover in school though. It was at the start of the cold war and during the Cuban Missile crisis, but me, naive soul that I am, always thought we were just doing tornado drills.

The 55-gallon drums of potable water in the basement halls never really tipped me off either.

We had "Air Raid Drills" back when I was in elementary school in the mid 70's. The siren would go off, we'd all file out single-file into the hall, stop, duck and cover...sort of like the Blitzkrieg Bop.
