In an Orthodox home, does the family say grace before eating dinner? Would there ever be an occasion for someone to sing or chant the blessing before the meal?

Orthodox what?

Jewish, Greek, Russian, Coptic . . .

Oh sorry! Russian Orthodox, in particular. :)

Chanting the prayer before meals is very likely. Also, everyone would stand up and face the icons before beginning the prayer. If a priest is present, the prayer before the meal would conclude with a blessing from him. After everyone is done, they would all get up and face the icons again for a blessing of the leftovers.

Thanks! I was hoping the chanting would be unusual though, because I want the character to act a little strange at the dinner table. Not completely bizarre, but just a little bit.

Will have to ponder this some more.

And thanks for the information about the icons as well.

Well, he could chant unusually. Some Russian Orthodox chant gets very theatrical (in church). If everybody else is chanting normally and unpretentiously, like average untrained singers, and he suddenly busts out with several operatic trills, that would probably provoke some looks.
