A Blog Carnival is where a group of bloggers all blog on the same topic at the same time. Each blogger naturally has their own take on the topic, which makes it more interesting and fun to participate in.

How to participate:
  1. Blog about the Authors Advocate Legal Fund. Include a link to the Author Advocates Legal Defense Fund page where people can donate. The blog carnival starts NOW and continues for one week from the date of this posting. Some people have already done their post in support of the Author Advocates Legal Defense Fund, mostly because I'm slow to get things going sometimes, so please, post that permalink. You're just a mindreader and proactive and we love you! But remember to keep it civil. Don't make any personal attacks - they won't help anyone and may bring you unwanted legal action. Stress the need to donate to the legal defense fund.
  2. Post in this thread with the permalink to that post on your blog. While a blog address will look something like http://joeschmoe.blogspot.com, a permalink will look something like http://joeschmoe.blogspot.com/2008/07/author-advocate-defense-fund.html. We need that long link.
  3. I will compile a list of all the participants and their permalink URLs in this thread, hence the need for the permalink. I don't know how many people will participate in this blog carnival, but I honestly don't want to chase down who knows how many permalinks. So, please, be kind, and provide the permalink. :)
  4. When the blog carnival is over, post the URL list either at the end of that same post or in another post. This will give everyone who participated some massive link love, which will, in turn, help with search engine rankings and the like. And that is always good. :) Please complete this within three days of the blog carnival ending.
  5. When the blog carnival is over, post a comment on the five blog entries after yours on that same list. That just gives a bit more love cuz, you know, we all love comments. :) If you're at the end of the list, then start counting again at the top of the list until you have your five. Please get your comments done within three days of the blog carnival ending.
  6. If you have a question or five, ASK!
  7. If you have a suggestion for a future blog carnival topic, whether concerning the Author Advocates Legal Defense Fund or another related topic or an unrelated topic, please suggest away. Or feel free to start the blog carnival yourself or, if you feel shy, you can always ask me or someone else to start it.
In the event that you haven't heard about the Author Advocates Legal Fund, here are some relevant links:
Thank you for your interest and for participating. Let the fun begin!

---------
If you want to have the link to the donate button in your signature, just copy everything inside the html tag:

HTML:
[B][COLOR=Red]Donate to the AW Author Advocates Legal Defense Fund[/COLOR][/B]
[URL="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=authoradvocatedonat%20ions%40gmail%2ecom&no_shipping=1&no_note=1&tax=0&c%20%20urrency_code=USD&lc=US&bn=PP%2dDonationsBF&char%20set%20=UTF%2d8"][IMG]https://www.paypal.com/en_US/i/btn/btn_donateCC_LG.gif[/IMG][/URL]

and then, when you're trying to add it to your signature, switch editor mode so it shows the BBCode (the stuff with the [ and ]), then paste it in. That should take care of it. :)
-------
If you want to add the donate button to your blog, copy everything inside the code tags:

Code:
<form action="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr" method="post"> <input type="hidden" name="cmd" value="_s-xclick"> <input type="image" src="https://www.paypal.com/en_US/i/btn/btn_donateCC_LG.gif" border="0" name="submit" alt="PayPal - The safer, easier way to pay online!"> <img alt="" border="0" src="https://www.paypal.com/en_US/i/scr/pixel.gif" width="1" height="1"> <input type="hidden" name="encrypted" value="-----BEGIN PKCS7-----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-----END PKCS7----- "> </form>

And paste it wherever you want it.

Two caveats. At least.

If you're posting the code into a blog entry, you'll need to be in HTML view to do it. Otherwise, it'll just end up looking funky.

If you're on a hosted blog, such as on the Blogspot, WordPress, TypePad, LiveJournal, MySpace blogging sites, then you won't necessarily be able to post it into the blog post itself. You might be limited to posting it into a sidebar. Sites like that limit how and where scripts can be used to prevent malicious code from infiltrating their servers.

I would like to post a few words of caution - be very civil. I would recommend that the defendant's need for help is key. Blogging about the Plaintiff may bring you to her (unwanted) attention.

By the way, I'm linking on the Author Advocate web page to all these blogs - if you prefer I *don't* link to you, please let me know!

I have a blog scheduled to go live tomorrow at 11 am. I'll be back with a permalink for you, then.

Thanks for organizing this, Laurie. And thanks to Dawn for being so cool. :) Let me know what else I can do to help, Dawn.

NewroticGirl

I saw a link on Scalzi's blog today... which is how I found out about the fund drive! (Also posted a link on my own, but I kinda think Mr. Scalzi gets more readers than I do, somehow...) ;)

I saw the Scalzi and Gaiman posts just now (been away on vacation with my son). Unfortunately some time after I left the donation button on the site stopped working.

I know it was fine when I left and I've replaced the HTML (AGAIN!!!) and it's working now - but who knows how many people tried and couldn't donate while I was gone!

Does any one know anything about Google Pages? Could they have disabled the code somehow because I was getting too much traffic??

I wouldn't have thought so. Plus if they disabled anything, then replacing the HTML wouldn't work.

How many times have you replaced the HTML code and was there anything that you can think of that might have precipitated the HTML getting scrambled?

I've replaced it 3 times now and it seems that it goes down when traffic goes up. :( I got 3 emails from people who had visited from Scalzi's blog over the weekend, when, of course, I was out of town and didn't check my computer for 3 days! grrrrrrrr

btw, the HTML part that keeps disappearing is the code between the < form > tags - the image stays, but the code that links it to the PayPal donation site is what goes away.

Just to double check for any of us who have the button on our pages, do we need to relink?

No, it's just my darn web page and the PayPal script that's the problem. I'm probably going to change it to the that Laurie has posted, myself. You should be fine.

Dawno, I'm wondering if it has something to do with Google's T&C for websites hosted by them, assuming you're talking about the Googlepage one. Or Blogspot's T&C if it's on the Blogspot blog. Perhaps certain types of code are automatically stripped? That's about the only thing I can think of.

It's the googlepages site that gave me the trouble - I check it at least once a day now, and it's still ok so far. Weirdness upon weirdness...the one in the blogger blog's sidebar has been fine since I put it up.
