I keep hearing that part of your marketing strategy should be to know who your readers will be. How can you find that out? Even if you find books that may be similar to yours, how do you find out who buys them?

I don't know that you have to be that scientific. My book is about a daughter who has a difficult relationship with her mother, so I could say that it would appeal to women. And it takes place over the course of a ten week fiction class and there are writing exercises in it, so I could say it would appeal to people who are interested in writing. (Men and women?) But I never got any more specific than that. Of course, I'm talking about fiction. It's probably very different with non-fiction.

Write something you absolutely love reading and let your agent worry about who to sell it to.

Not everyone likes broccoli, but there it is on the aisle, and buyers grab it up.
