Mood Swings

I know exactly what you mean. It gets worse when you start querying and the requests and rejections start coming in. When a request comes in, you think you've got something good. Then it's rejected, and you think it sucks completely.

Don't we all know what you're talking about.

I was away from my current WIP for 10 days and when I went back to it I couldn't believe how bad it'd gotten.

Oh, lord, I know just what you mean! I'm trying to do final edits on my WIP, and some days I'm so throughly sick of it I can't even manage a page. It seemed so brilliant in the beginning....

I'm right there with you! I go back and forth like that all the time, and it's starting to get to me.

Oh, gawd, yeah. It's eatin' at me bad. I'm still convinced I'm giving Crichton and Rollins a run for their money--damn those bastards. And yet when I get a rejection paragraph from one of the big editors, I go into such a downhill funk I want to give up writing and trash the puter. I keep thinking that they have to be heartless SOBs not to love this touching, tear-jerker story.

And I'm seeing nothing but heartless SOBs out there lately. So what kind of message is that sending me?

I am in that stage with my WIP right now where I'm in love with it (also known as "I-haven't-submitted-it-yet-so-it-hasn't-been-crapped-on-yet-itis."). With everything though, I go through love/hate relationships with it. One day I think, "Heck, yes! This is awesome!" and the next day I'm ready to trash it.

seaaircarol, you're normal. At least normal for a writer!! Mood swings seem to be part of the territory.

I have those kinds of mood swings all the time. They're horrible. I can look at a manuscript I've poured months of work into, and one minute think it's outstanding writing, while the next minute I want to toss it into the circular file.

And it's called Bi-Polar, not Schizophrenia.

I'm in the roughing-out phase of writing and boy, is it rough! And my muse - where did she go? - she was here just recently.

Have you seen her? If so, please tell her to return...

Today I love my WIP. Yesterday it was the worst crap ever written. Twenty minutes from now it will probably be garbage again.

Oh! I feel better!
So it's not just me.
I am on my third draft of a novel and I really like it (quite a bit of the time)!
But then I go crashing down and want to pull my hair out.
It's an unending cycle, will it ever get better?
eek!

I'm sitting here trying to write a query and I keep thinking...this sucks. How can I query? I thought it was good--now I'm not so sure.

We are all bipolar. I sometimes feel like I'm sitting around plucking the petals off a daisy. "I love my story."

Blech.

My problem is that I take it seriously with respect to me. "I'm a good writer." "I can't write a complete sentence." "I'm brilliant." "I'm an idiot."
