So I broke my hard drive. Again. My PC booted ok, but wouldn't run any programs. It's a virus, but I can't run the virus checker because I can't run any programs.....

No problem. It should be fine, after all my PC backs up to the server every time I switch it off ( we set this up last time I fried my hard drive :)). All my writing is safe. All I need is a new hard drive, and there's at least three just hanging around.

Only the backup hasn't been working. Oh, it told me every time I logged off that it was synching files. But it lied. For three months.

Cue nervous breakdown

After two days of concerted bribery ( on my part) and effort ( on the old man's) we have managed to save my data from the screwed hard drive and save it out. Huzzah! Only now I have to have Vista. NOT Huzzah. Oh and I'm on my son's PC for now which means I can't go to almost any website as they're blocked ( a little screen pops up with a piccy of the dog on it saying 'Frek's on patrol') I can't even get to hotmail. So not huzzah I can't begin to say. No nekkid men pics!

Moral: always check your backup. And marry a technical guru.

I had something for this...

You're half right Idiots...you should definitely always check your backups and insure that they're running properly. I must wholeheartedly disagree with the second half of your statement, however. Technical gurus as a whole are one huge pain in the ass.

I often wish I could make it so that nobody knew I had any knowledge about technical stuff. It's not all it's cracked up to be. Fix this, fix that. Help me with this, help me with that. I don't understand this math stuff. Can you give me a hand with my physics homework?

Well, maybe it hasn't always been so bad.

Oh I don't know -- he can make almost anything vibrate for a start...

This is why hubby has stopped fixing things for mates ( except one or two). The constant frigging phone calls, and people getting stroppy if he doesn't drop everything to help them out ASAP. Now he just gives them his business card and says 'Hourly rate 70 pounds. As you're a mate I'll do it for fifty.' Win - win situation :)

AW. A very nice place!
that's messed up about the comp.
Give the faulty drive a kick from me.
Lately I've been backing up my files on a flash drive.
Cost $20 and has a 2G storage.

Cool that you salvaged your data.
Kudos to yer O.M..

Vehicle has wrong number of wheels

Is horrible colour

And where exactly are the nekkid men draped over it? In baby oil and not much else? I only buy vehicles if they come with a free nekkid man. Preferably one where he doesn't need a paper bag on his head.

My memory stick has already been stuffed with everything Anis. I just thought, as the server had it backed up....

Being a tech guru (or a proto-guru at the time) got me a high SAT score. I often wondered where that would take me in life, but now I see that my SAT score and $4.95 will get me something hot to drink at the nearest Starbucks.

This "fixing things for mates" and "as you're a mate" stuff - I think what you're saying translates into USA English as friend, but The IntraWeb doesn't know to do that translation. The word mate has a much, uh, stronger connotation over here...
I'm guessing it starts with porn and ends with ography.
Just so people know that playing with your porn-o-graph is not the only way that Bad Things things can happen on a computer:

It could start with Unsolicited and end with "WTF happened to my PayPal account? I double-checked my password only yesterday, just like they asked me to!"

Ohh does it? Do tell.

And yes, it was porn -- AW porn. I saw a picture of SP with baby oil and that was it -- broke PC. It couldn't handle the sexiness.

Actually I have no idea where it came from. Downloaded nothing dodgy, no odd e-mails, installed nothing for months. *shrugs* ah well.
