thank you all. i have more specifics about his death.

"Chris on the Europe trip hiking the alps with a group of students. It had rained heavily the night before, and the path was slippery and still wet. Chris slipped and fell off the side of a 25 meter (82 foot) cliff where he landed on his head and rolled into a water hole.

A small group of student volunteers climbed down to where he had landed to try and aid in the rescue. Chris landed on his head and was instantly killed, he was pronounced dead on the scene."

thank you again for your kind words and support.

DandF, I don't know how you feel, but I do wish you peace.

I lost a cousin in exactly the same way - exactly - about five years ago. She was in college at the time.

Here's hoping there are safer trails where they've gone.

It sucks losing friends at any age, but when we're young, it's especially painful. It brings us that much closer to understanding that we're not indestructible, that there is an end to everything and our precious lives hang by the most tenuous of threads that can break at any time.

Your friend's passing is shocking and tragic to you now; but as time goes on, you'll find that he will stay with you, perhaps forever, filling your heart and thoughts with a continued presence that touches your life when you least expect it. And in that sense, he will never truly die for you, for he will help to enrich your future when you think of him with a smile or a nod or a meaningful glance toward the heavens.

So, so sorry.

07-01-2008, 06:26 AM
So sorry for your loss.

I am always reminded of Edna St. Vincent Millay's amazing poem "Dirge Without Music" by events like these. Its last stanza says it all:

Down, down, down into the darkness of the grave
Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind;
Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave.
I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned.

Sorry about your loss. It is okay to cry as much as you want.
