View Full Version : The Atlanta Nights Fake Cover Compo

Richard

As mentioned by Jenna and co in the big Publish America thread. A nice, simple competition - either Photoshop or describe the ideal Atlanta Nights cover, with the best winning an Absolute Markets Premium Edition subscription. Was expecting someone else to have set up the thread, but I don't see one yet, so here we go ;-)

You mean something like this?

Ok. This cover needs to be pieced together from as many cliches as possible, just like the book. And in the spirit of typical PublishAnyone covers, it must be made entirely from clip art. So, here I go with a verbal description as I don't have my image editing software at work:

1. The background must be a blue sky with clouds in it - PublishAmerica's favorite background.
2. Atlanta is the first word in the title. Since PA hasn't got anyone from Atlanta, they would need to go with the obvious symbol there. Take a peach and put it in front of that blue sky.
3. There's a lot of action in it too. So we need to put the hand with the gun in front of the peach.
4. And of course this novel has so many sex scenes it isn't even funny. This means that the book must have a bare chested hunk on the cover. And what could be better than putting a bare-chested Fabio himself in front of the cover?
5. Fabio needs to have his arm around an attractive woman. But the picture just shows Fabio with his hands on his hips. No problem! We'll just get a picture of an attractive woman with someone's hand on her hip and put her right in front of and alongside Fabio, covering up his left arm. Never mind that the hand is a few shades paler than Fabio and the shadows are all wrong so it is obvious these two are from different pictures.

So we have Fabio with an attractive woman standing alongside him. In front of a hand with a gun. In front of a peach. In front of a blue sky.

(DISCLAIMER: It's an intentionally crap copy and paste job on the girl, and yes, I know that's the Sydney Opera House in the background. Just clarifying that in case anyone I know is looking at it ;-))

I've heard about this "Atlanta Nights" book that was submitted to PA and laughed my *beep* off! And I've read sooooooo many debates about the pros and cons of PA on several other writing boards, but I've never heard it referred to as "PublishAnyone". That's hilarious! Lol...

And how do you get your cover to appear on your post?

Richard

I say go ahead - the more the merrier. To post a cover, you need to upload it to your website and then put this:

(only without any spaces, and with your real address in the middle)

Sadly, quite a few of these look more like real book covers than some of the cover art PA has put on real books!

DaveKuzminski
04-18-2005, 11:33 PM
Some of the covers I like most are those picturing a city that is clearly not Atlanta. Of course, I also like the covers showing a tropical beach typical of what can be found at Atlanta, though I forget which side of town the beach was on. ;)

Some of the covers I like most are those picturing a city that is clearly not Atlanta. ...
I kinda figured that the spirit of PA called for having no idea what Atlanta looks like (hence browsing generic clip art of "city skyline" for ones that were about the right height-to-width ratio or that I could distort adequately), and for that matter, having no idea of the content of the book. A city (Atlanta, Atlantic City, whatever). Night. Close enough. With hundreds of thousands of royalty-free clipart illustrations within easy reach, the possibilities are endless. None of my three tries took more than a few minutes.

This cat person loves it! Is there a Cats thread on AW somewhere? I have recently attended a couple of critique group meetings in my area (spinoffs of a writers club), virtually all of the members of which turned out to be cat fanatics--three of them writing books about (or "by") their cats. Is there somethng about writing and cats that goes together?

Ken, I think there is! My kitty cat loves to sit on my lap when I'm writing. Perhaps he is sending me subconscious messages of what to write. In fact, he suggested that last book cover, I think. Why do I suddenly have cravings for milk & tuna??? Gotta go...Meowwww...

As a collorary to this, though others might not want to start another contest unless it's solely for the bragging rights and not some prize, how about a competition in which the artists design a cover as they believe PA would create it for real bestsellers and other famous books? Just imagine the fun you can have showing what Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, War and Peace, Moby Dick, and others might have looked like had PA gotten their mitts on them. ;)

Oh, if this is tried, let's make it a topic thread with only entries in it. All other remarks should be limited to messages and email or a parallel thread. Okay?

The staircase (with dimensions altered to fit) started as a photo I took in Carmel, CA. It is one of my better pictures, in the original form (both in color and as turned to black and white, which I think is rather evocative of something sinister).

This could be on a real noir novel, dontcha think?

Art is ... where you find it.

Some art is good. Some art is bad. Some is so bad it's good. Some is so bad ... it's still bad anyway.

From the ever-amusing Making Light (http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/), I bring this OT offering (please follow the links):

Most bad art is simply dull. Some inspires livelier reactions; for example, the poetry of Julia (http://www.wmich.edu/english/txt/Moore/) Moore (http://www.litencyc.com/php/speople.php?rec=true&UID=3179) and William (http://www.taynet.co.uk/users/mcgon/default.htp)T. (http://www.mcgonagall-online.org.uk/)McGonagall (http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/centlib/mcgon.htm), Amanda McKittrick Ros (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/nick.page1/worst/ros/ros.html)s novels, Florence (http://www.maxbass.com/Florence-Foster-Jenkins.htm)Foster (http://radio.cbc.ca/programs/asithappens/entertainment/010807_florence.html)Jenkins (http://www.wolaver.org/Humor/jenkins.htm) recordings, Edward (http://www.phillyburbs.com/edwood/) D. Back OT:

I have a favorite cover here, I confess. But I'll Never Tell which one. Bwah hah hah hah hah!

And if y'all haven't yet bought your own copy of Atlanta Nights (http://www.lulu.com/content/102550), there's still plenty more in stock! Available in brick-and-mortar bookstores from sea to shining sea and in dozens of foreign countries! Just like the books of your favorite traditional publisher!

Wow, Ann. You've been very busy creating covers! The swamp cover is great...I'm also fond of the black/white cover. They are all very nice.

Thank you Hawk, so nice of you to say that. :Sun:

(DISCLAIMER: It's an intentionally crap copy and paste job on the girl, and yes, I know that's the Sydney Opera House in the background. Just clarifying that in case anyone I know is looking at it ;-))It's great. The Sydney Opera House has a very interesting shape when viewed from that angle, doesn't it?

The funniest thing about Jenna's entry is that I think I have seen PA books with essentially the same cover art.

So far I'm liking the Sydney Opera House cover, Galoot's offerings (can't decide between the St Louie arch or the giant peach-in-the-sky), Tilda's Hula Girl (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v487/ahovi/travistea_tilda.jpg) cover (especially for the misplaced apostrophe's), and of course the photomosaic version of the cover.

The cover copy on pepperlandgirl's Atlanta Knights is very good, too.

More common usage errors in the copy please. Especially misuse of your/you're, to/too, lose/loose and apostrophized plurals.

Hmm. I should think about that. Are you also collecting inputs for cover copy? I can do that.

When and where does the actual voting take place?

I was merely commenting on what has been posted so far. When the actual voting comes around, I will be more than happy to sell my vote for brownies, dear lady. Especially the way you make them.

I have no idea when they are voting. I was just trying to simplify looking at the book covers by making a thread that was easier. Did you take a look at it?
It seems like somehow this all got lost in "silly blob dilemma".

Hi-

I took them off. If Ann wants them on there, that's fine, but she was so concerned that they'd been included the first time around, that when I saw them, I just took them down. I thought I'd missed them. No one informed me there'd been a change of heart regarding those links.

Ann or T42, if you would, please PM me and let me know what's going on.

Thanks!

Melina

Hi-

Ann or T42, if you would, please PM me and let me know what's going on.

Thanks!

Melina

Sorry, Melina, I assumed you knew, since you did not respond to my PM. I changed the location of the cover URLs and they were then put back up with my permission. I did PM everyone and let them know.

Thanks

Okay-

Ann, thanks for the PM. Mac was kind enough to take care of the original problem for me, because the request to remove them took place when I was away from the boards. Glad to know everything has been fixed. Let the show go on!

Love it.

Okay, now the problem: There are too many entries for me to put it up for a poll-style vote. (I can put up to 10 options in a poll.)

SO! I need two guest judges to join me to narrow it down to the 10 best entries before we can open it up to the rest of the members to vote.

Obviously, you can't judge if you've entered.

So, who wants to narrow it down with me and why should I choose you?

:hat:

Jenna, here's a possible solution: For those who entered more than once, have a sub-poll to determine their best entry. Then let that entry go against the other entries. That might get it down to a manageable number.

JennaGlatzer
05-07-2005, 03:01 AM
It's still more than 10 that way.

What the heck? I would have sworn I'd have dozens of guest judges volunteering by now. Don't make me have to come over there and drag you. I'll do it, you know.:box:

2 people to chat with me about the best 10 entries, then we'll open it up to a poll to determine the winner.

And Marlene, undelete your last cover pic! It was funny!

Jeanna, maybe one off-topic on the NEPA thread to let them know you need judges? I don't know how many check this thread now. I just saw it/you on the new post list and came over.

There's also that condensed list that Mem made for easier viewing.

Nah, Dawno and I can handle it. If we start fist-fighting or anything, I'll make Jim break it up.

OK, guys, any last-minute entries have to be in tonight (before midnight ET); Dawno The Magnificent and I are going to work on coming up with the 10 finalists tomorrow!
