This week's post is about Writing Outside of Your Race. I'd really like to hear from those who have done it. The reactions you've received. Was your character considered authentic? Visit me at http://carolinewilson.typepad.com

Well, I'm not a writer of fiction, so I haven't had much reason to write "outside of my own race" yet. Though I am taking a stab at writing a piece of interracial erotica (and trying to avoid it turning into porn).

I'm sure your mom is a nice lady who wants to see you become a big success and make lots of money so you can build her a brand new house. But I would not worry too much over her concern over one of your characters being White. I'm sure you're familiar with the saying, "It's easier to get forgiveness than permission."

Don't look to others, not even family or friends, to validate your decisions as a writer. You'll never please them all and you'll only displease yourself by not keeping faith with yourself.

Write it the way you feel it. If your character speaks fluent French and the only French you know is french fries, so what? If your character is a die-hard liberal and you're a rock-solid conservative, what of it? All that matters is you've been true to both the authenticity of your characters and yourself as a writer.

I don't know if this makes any sense Ms. Wilson, but if it doesn't forgive me for chewing on your ear. In the figurative if not literal sense.
