McCain using song at events without permission

I don't really know whether candidates feel an obligation to get permission in advance, but I find the McCain campaign's response to Hall's objection really odd:

McCain camp sends over this response to MSNBC's David Shuster. "We love John Hall's stuff," spokesman Brian Rogers said. " We will take his concerns under consideration. Beyond that, we have no other comment."

Is any response other than "OK, we'll stop using it," appropriate?

Well, it would be nice if they got permission. Likewise, it would be nice if they just said that they would stop using the music if the artists ask them to stop.

Does Hall still own the publishing? Because if not, it may not matter what he wants done with it...
