Superstitious?

Here's a little history courtesy of Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_the_13th).

History

Both the number thirteen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/13_%28number%29) and Friday have been considered unlucky:

In numerology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numerology), the number twelve is considered the number of completeness, as reflected in the twelve months of the year, twelve recognized signs of the zodiac, the twelve tribes of Israel, the twelve Apostles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostle) of Jesus, etc., whereas the number thirteen was considered irregular, transgressing this completeness.[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_the_13th#cite_note-NatGeo-1) There is also a superstition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thirteen_Club), thought by some to derive from the Last Supper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Supper), that having thirteen people seated at a table will result in the death of one of the diners.
Friday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Friday), as the day on which Jesus Christ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_Christ) was crucified (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crucifixion), has been viewed both positively and negatively among Christians. The actual day of Crucifixion was the 14th day of Nisan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nisan) in the Hebrew Lunar calendar which does not correspond to "Friday" in the solar calendar of Rome. The 15th day of Nissan (beginning at Sundown) is celebration of Passover (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passover).Despite the onus on the two separated elements, there is no evidence for a link between the two before the 19th century. The earliest known reference in English occurs in a 1869 biography of Gioachino Rossini (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gioachino_Rossini):
[Rossini] was surrounded to the last by admiring and affectionate friends; and if it be true that, like so many other Italians, he regarded Friday as an unlucky day, and thirteen as an unlucky number, it is remarkable that on Friday, the 13th of November, he died.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_the_13th#cite_note-2) However, only in the 20th century did the superstition receive greater audience, as
Friday the 13th doesn't even merit a mention in E. Cobham Brewer's voluminous 1898 edition of the Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, though one does find entries for "Friday, an Unlucky Day" and "Thirteen Unlucky." When the date of ill fate finally does make an appearance in later editions of the text, it is without extravagant claims as to the superstition's historicity or longevity.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_the_13th#cite_note-why-3) Though the superstition developed relatively recently, much older origins are often claimed for it, most notably in the novel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novel) The Da Vinci Code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Da_Vinci_Code) (and later the film), which traced the belief to the arrest of the Knights Templar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_Templar) on Friday October 13 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_13), 1307 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1307).[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_the_13th#cite_note-why-3)

My daughter was born on Friday the 13th, and it was Alfred Hitchcock's birthday.

She's turned out ok. So far.

I met my ex-wife on Friday the 13th and our divorce was final on Good Friday, some twenty years later.

I thought so, too, but you would be surprised how many nurses said things like "Maybe she'll wait until after midnight to be born, so she won't have the 13th for a birthday."

Weird.

My youngest daughter was born on the 13th, but it was a Thursday. The one nurse was so kind as to tell me that she would be very lucky...because of all the 3's. And here I thought it would be because she took after her Poppa and had a couple of 13's...

The newest neighborhood cat is black with a white-tipped tail. I hope it finds other suckers before October 1 because if it doesn't I'll have the bad luck of a big vet bill.

I don't know the cat's gender. It may already have slaves. If it sticks around I'll pass the word through to some Wiccan acquaintances. They themselves are full up but they might know of someone who isn't.

So it's not related to Haggis' 13th Chihuahua, the one being the demonically possessed that ruined his tax returns and spoiled his milk?

I'm so mixed up.

The province decided it would be fun to place the grade 12 provincial math exam today. Friday the thirteenth. As if the majority of students failing every year (yes, the large majority of students in Nova Scotia who take the exam have consistently failed it over the years) wasn't bad enough, they had to add superstition to the mix.

Thankfully, I'm not superstitious. And I'm decent at math. I think I did okay.

So no strange happenings today, huh?

Figures.

I had a strange day... it was totally perfect. I had a playdate with my seven-year-old daughter (the other one was still has school). We played basketball, took a nature walk, ran through a great big green field, went to the library, bought burgers and took them to some fancy gardens for a picnic, played chess on a board with giant pieces.

So yeah, I had a strange day. :)

I am usually abnormally lucky on Friday the 13th, today, not so much. I did hear from Hubby (yea!), but I also had to say goodbye to my brother who is leaving to Afghanistan tomorrow. So it all balanced itself out.

Nah, I'm not superstititous, though I got a rejection in the mail and to top it off in my email. So it was a consistently tacky day. :)

I love Friday the 13th. When I worked at a bank several years ago, I got robbed. He didn't get away with much and I got to go home early that day. He was caught the following month on Friday the 13th.

Good for me. Not so good for him. :D

Nothing bad happened to me. :D And I don't believe the whole 13th day thing.

I also claim 13 as my lucky number.

When I was a freshman in highschool there were two slots open for the Varsity squad. A friend of mine got the first slot and I somehow managed the last slot. No sophmores made it.

So I got the last jersey, #13. I've cosidered it lucky every since.

Couldn't be that unlucky. School got out for this year on Friday, the 13th of June. And surprisingly, no one pulled the fire alarm like last year (a pointless stunt anyway, since the last day is always a half-day). No unexpected intruders showed up. Our teachers' computers with all our grades didn't mysteriously go up in flames. It didn't rain and got sunny just like it was supposed to. I got all A's, as far as I can tell. *shrugs*

ETA: Oh gawd, I almost forgot about Pairess Hilltunn, teh harvard stoodent, over there.

ETAA: There, much better. :D
