You probably just copied the whole post...you can edit it, as well, or delete it and just copy what I have pasted below. However, seeing as this thread is not very long, I don't think an overview is necessary, especially since others are bound to find more search links for you.

Here are the links, without the picture and other info of mine:

http://yagoohoogle.com/ (I think this is what you meant.)

http://search.yahoo.com/

http://www.altavista.com/

http://www.askjeeves.com/ or http://www.ask.com/

http://search.msn.com/

http://www.lycos.com/

http://www.search.com/

or here is a search engine for search engines...

I love KARTOO. It's a meta-search engine that gathers from a set of other search engines and presents the results in a rather interesting map format. When you hover over one of the results, you get a synopsis over on the left without having to go to the site. It takes a little bit of playing around with, but once you get the hang of the interface, you'll find it quite useful. At least I do.

This is bloody brilliant! Certainly makes a change from trawling Google. Definitely one to bookmark. Cheers!

There are billions of search engines, but they're mostly entirely useless. If you have your site on the main ones, they should get picked up by the smaller ones. The most crucial right now are Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Ask (That's Ask Jeeves and Teoma). The others are nice to have, and ones like Ujiko occasionally pop up with some fun features, but I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about them.

Ask for Kartoo - are you kidding? I'd rather poke my eyes out with a fork than try to squeeze any info out of that thing.

There is a free service called 'submit it' that will cover most of the small ones (assuming you are publicising a page)

Often, you don't want to submit to everyone under the sun - a lot of the smaller ones use it as a way of harvesting addresses so that they can spam you later on.

Does it cost to make use of it? Got the adress?

Tnx for this Richard!

A few of the ones on your list aren't search engines, but rather 'metasearch' engines - the same technology in a different wrapper (for example, Ask Jeeves and Teoma are both Ask - just different spins on the technology, metacrawler hits several at onces, and Yahgoohoogle just sticks Yahoo! and Google on both sides of the screen. It's not a joint service, just some guy's pet project.)

Tnx for the summary Galoot. I'll sort it out + make comprehensive list later. Smile, yes, search for search machines on which one? I think this'll do, no?

Which small pic? If you mean the one under the menu, it's served from Flickr, so if their server's down, it won't appear. If you mean the one that used to appear on the main address before clicking through the journal pages, it's gone - splash pages are the work of Satan, and I only had one because there was no other way around it. The rest's been moved around now, so I can just jump straight in.

Its above ... 'Each episode is a 5 min zap of weirdness...' I look like its a 'HyperText-overdrachtsprotocol' Anyway there is something that is not there. By the way imo your frontdoor was better. Why do you want people to 'dive' in at second page? But page is good. Oeee professional and I have this jealous animosity blah blah etc. Hope you find what I meant by 'pic missing'. Its only that.

That's not a picture, it's a Flash file. If you don't have the Flash player installed, it won't appear. If you do, it displays a Play button which runs the audio clip from the show I was talking about.

By the way imo your frontdoor was better. Why do you want people to 'dive' in at second page?

Splash pages are a total and utter waste of time. If you get to my site, you've done for one of two reasons - you've followed a link, in which case you won't see the splash - or you know who I am, in which case you don't need me to tell you. Nobody on the planet will ever type http://www.richardcobbett.co.uk as a random sequence of letters, therefore nobody needs it. On the entire planet.

In general, there are only two reasons to have one (at least, on a normal page - multimedia can be the exception to most web rules): offering content in different languages (I don't) and thus having to provide an option for the user to choose, or jumping into a particular part of the site.

Most people return for the dynamic content on the Journal (posts/comments) rather than the static bits around the side (anime reviews, currently down, are the one minor exception), therefore it's good web sense to provide it up front. Anything else is only one or two clicks away, using the side menus and the internal banner system.

And that's just for new readers. EXISTING readers, of the kind I try to draw back with the updates, have even less reason to want to skip through a splash page every time they visit. Basically, they're a bad idea. The absolute only reason I had one before was because it was the only way to fix a software glitch - it was always going to be taken down the instant it got fixed.

Why do you want people to 'dive' in at second page?

That's not thinking in the context of the web. The first page is the page that the reader lands on - as a web designer, it's your job to work with the fact rather than try and fight it. The user should be able to read your site however they like - I even specifically put the internal banner in the Banner directory so that ad-blocking software will nuke it (and at some point plan to slip some jokes and things into the background).

Plus, in purely technical terms, splash pages can be search engine death.

Here's a full link on why splash pages are best avoided.

http://www.websiteoptimization.com/speed/tweak/splash/

The only reason I had for putting one on my site was that the software exploded on me and I had to include one temporarily. It was always intended to go as soon as I could fix the problem.

Oh bummer! I was plus minus aware of this but I thought there was away round it! Your flash was very professional and way gone I gave you crit and asked whether you wanted 'fundamental' crit etc. Two points: 1) Psychologically if one uses flash the second page must be very short. Just something like 'I am a journalist. I have there and there influece, seek this that plus Contact me here'. Maybe also a link to 'My journal'. Reasoning also, people don't come to you ... you have to go to them. So search engins not that important. Bet the following= you use your flash, fix short second page and then you mail Bill Gates and tell him you are doing an artical on Flash for this and that newspaper and you casually drop URL somewhere in mail. Well you got the story! That will not happen with your 'Journal page'. As a matter of fact i thought of providing you with news etc. but then I saw your second page (journal) and thought, no, this guy is bending backwards to impress. ztc see? 2) It was never clear WHY you bothered to have a site. Compare mine. Nobody come there except those that I invite and they know beforehand what where to go. So philosophy behind it is 'impress one person at a time' and 'impress with a specific purpose'.

Anyway tnx for the links. i'll post another thread and you'll see why I needed the links.

I don't need to. I'm a full time magazine journalist, with a contract that expressly forbids me writing about most of the stuff that I know about in the competition.

If I ever go freelance, I'll do some fairly serious rejigging around to make it more of an personal portfolio site, but right now, it exists as a place for me to practice my web design and post whatever seems like a good idea a the time. I write stuff I think people will be interested in, and a few hundred troop in every day to read it. It's not bending over backwards - just something I find fun to do, which is as good a reason to do anything as I've ever found.

Reasoning also, people don't come to you ... you have to go to them. So search engins not that important.

Search engines are ALWAYS important. If nothing else, if someone's looking for you and you don't show up, they don't know your page exists. Secondly, if you do have unique content on there - to use this forum as an example, say you've written a book - people hunting for information on it won't find it. Search engines have their own ways of hitting sites, and it's important to play along with it so that they can find what you have to offer.

Bet the following= you use your flash, fix short second page and then you mail Bill Gates and tell him you are doing an artical on Flash for this and that newspaper and you casually drop URL somewhere in mail.

I realise you're just using that as an example, but that's really not how it works. Microsoft has a dedicated press center I could just call, without having to worry about splash pages. If they did check a site, they'd check the magazine/newspaper I namechecked to make sure they warranted the resources before caring about mine. I could have the net equivalent of the Mona Lisa, decked out in gold and rubies, and Bill's still not going to return my call.
