I'd promised some people over in ORPCC my drop sweet-milk scone recipe and then lost it. Just found it, so I figured I'd put it in here since someone else might have other bread-type recipes to share.

I got this recipe from a friend who traveled every summer to backpack around the UK and Europe and collect neato recipes. I believe this came from Cornwall, but I could be wrong, but it's simple enough for me to make and extremely versatile:

2-3 cups of flour
2 tsp Cream of Tartar (or 1 tsp CofT & t tsp corn starch--pure cornstarch doesn't work well)
1 tsp baking soda
1/2-3/4 stick butter or margarine
2/3 c buttermilk & more if needed
1/4 c honey or sugar

1. In large bowl, mix flour, cream of tartar & baking soda (& sugar, if used)*
2. Cut in butter until mixture is fine
3. In measuring cup, mix honey & buttermilk (if using honey)
4. Add liquid to dry ingredients, mixing to make a soft, somewhat sticky dough. Add more buttermilk if necessary
5. Drop by large spoonfuls onto oiled and floured baking sheet
6. Bake at 375 for 8-12 minutes

* Add raisins, apple bits, herbs, cheese, etc at this time, if desired.

SCONES!!!

(though... I have no idea what Cream of Tartar is...)

Cream of Tartar is generally found in the same aisle of most grocery stores (in the States) as the baking soda, baking powder and other baking spices are--though I don't know what it is either, I know it doesn't taste right if I just use cornstarch. heh.

DeleyanLee: Thank you for sharing! Your recipe reminds me of a Dutch oven cooking class a few weeks ago. The instructor made scones in his Dutch oven. Super light and fluffy!

I'll have to try your recipe. Always looking for great breakfast breads.
