I should have probably put this in the drunk thread for my own amusement.

Here's the Question: Is fantasy the new reality?

Role playing video games are at an all time high. Sites like Second Life have people paying real money for cyber homes and cyber drinks at cyber cafes. Kids are inventing personas that may not be close to accurate on myspace and face book.

Are we, as a society, moving from reality to fantasy, and should it concern us?

There always was daydreaming, which is from where I suspect most inventions probably come. And the need to fantasize was probably greater when reality was so mundane that it was torture. I think this latest trend may just be a version of that....a sadly overly-structured version, but just a harmless escape nonethesless.

To be serious for a moment. I think the reason for all the fantasy is that life has lost some of it's challenge. People no longer have to work the fields or work long hours for the basics in life. There is ample free time and that can be boring if you don't have any pastimes.
