View Full Version : My head really hurts

(this is where rants go, right?)

I've had recurrent sinusitis for three years now and this year it started in October-November, and it's almost June and the headaches are some of the worse I've had all winter. Antibiotics don't work, I'm allergic to penicillins (and I'd rather not take antibiotics anyway...rather not contribute to the MDR problem), over-the-counter stuff like excedrin, ibuprofen, aspirin, tylenol, sudafed, whatever, don't help, saline spray somehow makes it worse, the neti pot would have to be every ten minutes to make a lasting difference, and the only spray that helps at all (if I use it every ten minutes) contains alcohol, so it'll start making things worse if I use it enough to help.

It does not help that my dad likes to jump in with quips about the computer screen, caffeine, etc, which I can refute easily enough because those do not make me congested and also because over three years I have amassed enough information to know that there is no detectable trigger. STFU.

Basically I'm at one of those points where I'm trying to write a half-decent graduation speech, and simultaneously trying to punch a hole in my face, and it's time to vent.

At least I'm seeing an ENT uh, in the future...time to boil my sinuses...

Would standing in the shower and just letting the hot water and steam play over your sinus areas help?

I'M JUST TRYING TO HELP. DON'T YELL AT ME!

Have you ever tried a Neti Pot? I've heard they work wonders, as evidenced in this thread (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84276).

Hope you find a remedy soon that helps make you feel better. :)

Pot? Yeah, that'll help.

Humidity, (dryness), and neti pots don't help. I mean, neti pots are good temporary relief...but I have to use it so frequently that it dries out my nose, and then when I have to blow it (congestion ftw) apparently that causes more infection. Sucks to be all HOPEFUL when you try this stuff, then it doesn't work, huh?

Weed smells funny, and if I tried that people'd laugh at me. Silly Alleycat.

Maybe I can hop on that medicinal pot wagon...

This won't help you, but you might find it funny.

When I was a teenager I started having nosebleeds a lot. So, my dear parents took me to see a specialist. He decided that chemical cauterization was just the ticket. No one told me how much this would hurt. So the doctor sticks this stuff up my nose ("It won't hurt a bit.") . . . and it felt like a red hot poker being stuck in my nose. Yoweeeeeee!

See, wasn't that funny?

A friend of mine was having similar problems. She found out her nasal passages were almost completely blocked and had surgery. I haven't talked with her in a bit, but I know she was breathing better even while in recovery.

Oh, yikes. I had a doctor do that to me once. You know what fixes it for me? Yoga. It's been scientifically tested (by me, not doing yoga for a few months and then getting nosebleeds versus me doing yoga regularly and having no problems).

I wish yoga made my head stop hurting :(

Cauterization is something that will not occur in my nose.

Surgery is something that very well might...

My husband's allergies were horrible from August through September. Once he had a large polyp removed from his nose, he barely suffered. Ask your Dad to take a flashlight and peek into your nose! Or, better yet, see your doctor.

If all else fails, at least you know Latin.

I take it you haven't had an MRI scan done?

The worst I've ever had done are blood tests and the occasional back X-ray! I'm supposed to be relatively HEALTHY!

Maybe I have a hole in my cranium through which cerebral fluid is leaking, like that woman on Mystery Diagnosis. Sadly, an incurable condition that causes pain forever.

Then the flashlight would reveal my BRAIN.

Anyway, I feel like millions of microscopic miners are extracting DJ ore from within my face, so...I guess I'll go to sleep.

Sinus problems suck. Unfortunately, the neti pot takes time to become most effective. It would make sense that it might make your problems worse than better at first.

My mom had surgery not too many years ago. Other than the tampon looking things up her nose, I believe it was a vast improvement.

I'm supposed to be relatively HEALTHY!Oh, I was too. And then for a few baffling years I wasn't. Now I am again! Sometimes surgery can be a good thing.

My aunt had terrible sinus problems. She had the surgery to unblock them and was much better for a long time. She's had to have it done twice though. I hope you feel better soon.

This may seem a bit extreme, but....

If you haven't done it, try getting away from your environment for a while. A week or more. Go someplace as unlike your home/work routine as you can manage. From cold to hot, from wet to dry, and so on.

If your sinusitis improves, then something environmental is causing it, and you can zero in on the cause.
