Don't tell me you've never gotten hasty/sloppy while chopping some veggies and only your thumbnail saved you from a nice, deep cut.

Not to say that's their only utility, mind you.

aaahhh. Thumbnails.

Thumbnails good, yes.

Vaguely related: My DB (Darling Bride) does lamp working (That's playing with fire and molten glass -- an opportunity for you to acquire some of her individual work will be coming up in the auction thread.)

She wears medium length fake fingernails and says that they are safety equipment. "If you smell burning plastic, you're working too close to the flame."

I'm with SPMiller. My thumbnails have saved me from some ugly cuts before, and I can't think of anytime they have actually been detrimental to my cooking.

For some bizarre reason, I tend to go straight for the meat. I can't recall that my thumbnail or fingernails ever spared me the blood and pain.

eta: Always use that pusher thingy (safety shield) when slicing on the mandoline. Things go terribly wrong when you don't.
