We moved into our home 3 summers ago.

3 summers ago we had yellow tulips on the side of the garage.

2 summers ago we had yellow tulips on the side of the garage.

1 summer ago we had yellow tupips on the side of the garage.

This year? They're white with purple etching.

WTF?

Two thoughts:

1: Cross pollenation with someone elses tulips (can you imagine someone letting their tulips run around cross pollenating all over town.

2: Self-varigation. I understand temperature and environmental conditions will cause tulips to varigate themselves. (bit early for all this sex talk isn't it)

Yeah, it's cross-pollination, most likely. My neighbor's red roses turned my blue ones, dammit. (okay, they were really violet, but they're called Blue Girls and they were beyootiful)

I have to go with Self-variegation. I don't think bulbed plants can cross pollinate, but this is just my thought on the subject.

Changes in soil PH will result in color variations of several plants. Hydrangeas are a notorious example. Not sure about tulips. Just a thought.

Not that I'm complaining, mind you. These purple ones are a lot prettier than boring yellow. :) I just wondered how things like that happened. Not being a botanist, I had no idea plants could spontaneously change color.

Considering we're carnivores and eat rodents, I'd say, Yes. :)

I wonder if there is some kind of tulip variant that only comes up every 4-5 years.

I wonder, if the tulips aren't yellow, maybe the yellow migrated to somewhere else in the house or neighborhood.

"Honey, have you seen the neighbor's cat lately?"

According to these folks, it's caused by a virus that probably came from the soil, from the bulbs being in the same place every year. I read something similar on an edu site, how they introduce a virus to the bulbs to create different colors, so it kinda makes sense.

Your tulips have herpes. :)

I believe if tulips have streaking in them it has a virus or disease... I plant tulips every year... and they never come up. :(

Bees pick up nasty ass pollen from under lamposts in bad neighborhoods and drop it into your pure boring yellows and VOILA! Floozy Tulips!

I'll take a picture and post it. It's not "streaking" per se, it's a white tulip and the edges of the petals are purple.

Maybe it's global warming.
