View Full Version : Have you ever been swayed by someone's avatar?

Smiling Ted
05-02-2008, 03:54 AM
Has it affected how you read their posts?

For instance, I freely confess that whenever I read Shweta's posts, I see her in my mind's eye as a psychotic four-color pirate captain, even though her current avatar is of small fluffy toys.

Such is the power of first impressions.

But for those of you who are--as Soccer Mom pointed out, my avatar is truth in advertising...

I think Ted has struck on a cool idea for a thread. The avatars here are as varied as our members. Some change them often, others hardly ever or not at all, while quite a few long time members never display avatars.

I've learned not to judge a book by it's cover, nor do I normally throw cliches around at random; it's the words and context and tone and sentiments contained in this box that draws me the most to form impressions of the people here.

Oddly enough (God I get absorbed in strange things) I tested this out on a site once. I was curious, so I ocassionally changed my avatar from say the serious, to the sexy, to the ridiculous. But didn't consciously change anything about my posts. In terms of responses, RPs, everything I may as well have been totally different people. It was simply impossible not to see the difference.

On the other hand, that was deliberate, and more natural choices probably reflect a lot about someone's character anyway.

Although I totally understand a whole lot of reasons not to do it, I really love seeing (not necessarily avatars) what people actually look like at some point. And it's a real buzz when someone suddenly reveals their identity and you get that "Wow. I simply never would have picked that!" Not in a bad way... but avatars definitely create a persona in one's mind.

I've seen firsthand how an avatar can affect the way people react to a person and I've often found it quite funny.

I have to say I'm not one of those people, though. To me, avatars are like a first impression. But it's only an initial thing. I mostly judge a person by the content of their posts and the totality of their demeanor online.

Sometimes, the online avatar issue reminds me of when you see that really gorgeous person across the room and you're like, "Wow!" and you step closer to maybe get to know them a little better.

Then they smile and reveal brown, rotten teeth coupled with bad breath and the whole effect is ruined.

Yeah, basically that's what the whole avatar thing reminds me of sometimes.

I'm already wondering if I should change my tone to a more demure, lady-like countenance, or remain gruff and man-like.

For example, should I say, "Please all of you, stop arguing and let's all just try to get along. Surely, we can all be friends. Thank you ever so much for your understanding."

Or...

"All right, assholes, back off and take your whiny shit someplace else before I whack you over the head with a 2 x 4. Jerkoffs."

I'm guessing a middle-of-the-road approach might work best. :D

I was going to say no, but...

For instance, I freely confess that whenever I read Shweta's posts, I see her in my mind's eye as a psychotic four-color pirate captain, even though her current avatar is of small fluffy toys.
Then I saw my name :D
I need to bring Bang back, or possibly Mama Gkika, even though they are four-color toys. Or possibly four color-toys.

(ETA: I do actually look a fair amount like Bang (the pirate queen).)

I do sometimes get people mixed up if they use the same avatar. Or lose track of someone if they change an avatar after a long time.

His foot is on the stair...
His hand is at the door...
I have a mace-can spray of holy water, I'm warning you.

And if that fails, I'll be forced to set Robert the Doll on you.

Except sometimes he comes back. :e2teeth:

Um, Herman Munster just does NOT inspire fear, no matter what alias he may travel under or how hard he tries to give the evil laugh. :D

Everyone's avatar sways me, as you are all absolutetly wonderful. :D I change my avatar to reflect me too, and that is part natural and part instinct sometimes.

I usually get a small, small understanding about the person from their avatar, like any form of expression.

To me, avatars are like very minor expressions of some aspect of one's personality. Some people like to express fun, some like to seem serious or dark/moody, some like to be silly... If your avatar is a clown with balloons, I will know that there a better chance that you aren't completely serious all the time. I've learned, however, that mileage varies too greatly to make a LARGE assumption about the person (I've been very surprised before, after thinking I understood people over the net).

Look at me, for instance. Just because I'm glowing orange, it doesn't mean I'm the Carrot Man. I live in a radiation chamber, and am trying to grow extra limbs, so I can work faster.

Yeah, pretty much what Dario said.

Sometimes I get annoyed when people use pictures of other "normal" people as their avatar. If you choose a celebrity or a cartoon character or the cover of some CD, I know it's not you. But if you put a picture of your spouse or SO as your avatar, that might be you, and I tend to expect that it is. So it gets weird when I think of that person saying what you just posted. Like if you're a flirty bouncy little twenty-something girl, and your avatar is the ex-wrestler you've been dating, I read these bubbly little posts and imagine them coming out of that big hairy guy's mouth and go "okay, WTF".

See, that doesn't bother me. I know not to take it seriously. But when someone's avatar is a green elephant thing I just have to wonder. "Would a bipedal green elephant devil thing really say that?"

SEE?! Beezle is a pirate kitten with what looks like a giant chest of booty just beneath his/her chin. How one can type like that, I have no idea.

Apart from Robeiae. I've a feeling he actually is Catbert.

I've seen avatars on some forums that make me instantly think the person's a moron and to skip their posts, but on the other hand, I've seen ones that are thoughtful, which is reflected in their posts as well.
