Geeeezzzeee...how difficult can it be to be a banker. Slush cash over the counter, take money and give receipt, then take a break just when there are ten people in line.

So, I'm off to BOA today for the purchase of a foreign bank draft. I called the international foreign currency number ahead of time to verify that I can purchase a bank draft without being a BOA customer.

No problem, said customer service woman "Hi, I'm Amy. How can I help you today?"

I then called the branch where Amy referred me. "Hi, I'd like to purchase a foreign bank draft but I'm not a BOA customer. Is that ok?"

"No problem. Just come into the branch and we'll set up. We have done this before."

"Ok. Thanks."

Next day, I visit the branch and approach the teller "I'd like to purchase a foreign bank draft, in Euros."

Teller: "Let me check with the manager. I'll be right back."

Manager: "Were you the guy who called yesterday?"

me: "Yes. What's the exchange rate for $3500 dollars to Euros?"

Manager: "$5,000 euros."

me: "Are you sure?"

Manager: "Yes. Do you have an account with us?"

me: "No. I called yesterday and was told I didn't need an account to purchase a foreign bank draft."

Manager: "I'm sorry sir. Who told you that?"

me: "You."

Manager: "Well sir, I'm sorry but you have to be a BOA customer."

me: "Can I open an account for $50.00?"

Short story: The exchange rate is $1.62 dollars for one Euro. The bank was doing the math at $1.62 euros to the dollar.

Hmmm....maybe I should go back tomorrow and open a checking account.

Now you know why banking fees are so high.
