Three islanders from Lesbos home of the ancient poet Sappho, who praised love between women have taken a gay rights group to court for using the word lesbian in its name.

One of the plaintiffs said Wednesday that the name of the association, Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece, "insults the identity" of the people of Lesbos, who are also known as Lesbians.

"My sister can't say she is a Lesbian," said Dimitris Lambrou. "Our geographical designation has been usurped by certain ladies who have no connection whatsoever with Lesbos," he said.

In other news, people from the state of Maine are up in arms about the misappropriation of the term "Maniacs."

And California legislators are contemplating changing the name of the state to better reflect reality (http://www.sho.com/site/californication/home.do).

After living on an island for 3 years (Key West) I can vouch for the fact that eventually ANYONE runs out of things to do.

Ah, Sappho! How many tears would you weep because of this?

I remember playing a computer game with characters from the isle of Lesbos.

What was that? Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? I miss those.

The best part of this thread: there are a handful of forum members who have literally nailed and epoxied their hands to their desks to keep from typing the litany of things that could be written here.

And I couldn't be more proud of your restraint. Keep it up. :)

I was thinking the exact same thing earlier. Brought a tear to my eye, it did.

It's not restraint, it's overload. There's just TOO many things practically begging to be said that my fingers locked up like the arms of an old manual typewriter. :D

Let's see of I can type with these long nails... (have you ever seen a cashier with three-inch fingernails? It's interesting how she pushes the register buttons and gets out the change. Woops, thread drift, not what I was gonna say...)

There was the politician who said "My opponent's sister is an admitted thesbian!"

Maybe she played one of the witches in Macbeth...

The powers that be here still don't seem to realize that our license plates should say the "Tollbooth State" or the "Outrageous Taxes State" - since there are more of either than there are gardens :D

How long has the term 'lesbian' been in use? Isn't this law suit a bit late?

Nah, they'll wait 10-15 years and then assess - so I'll get a bill running in the millions... just you wait...
