i will shortly be self publishing my first book based upon my blog. interest from readers has been high but not high enough for any publisher to take a punt on an unknown and with costs so cheap here i decided to take a risk and do it myself

first of all i decided like any good business start up how much money i could afford to lose!

next is how to get people aware of the book.

i will be e mailing publications that deal with the subject matter but because i am self publishing i don t have an amazon or lulu behind me but that may not be much of an issue if you google indonesian football book i am already on the first page!

distribution beyond the website will be tricky but i have a couple of ideas. a local bar owner has said he will promote the book in his bars which is a start

the other idea i have is to run round south east asia under the guise of a holiday, selling copies in the numerous second hand book shops you can find in bangkok etc

a couple of local football shops will also be targeted for sales as well as plugs in the local specialised press but given that the book is in english these outlets may not produce many sales...but that is not the main thing. the target is to build awareness...

the process hopefully kicks off end of may!

Lulu has the "Published by you" where you get the ISBN and they will distribute to Amazon, B&N, etc. for you as if they published but you retain all rights and the ISBN is under your name.

The only difference I could find in my research between pure self publishing and POD with Lulu is the $ per book (aka the profit!) - and that is different because Lulu is still POD even if you own the rights and the ISBN so the cost is higher.

Your book can certainly be on Amazon - all mine are and they are all self published. I did not upload them to Amazon, either, I did nothing, they just appeared. They took all the information from Nielsen, to whom I had input my details. All this may be different in Jakarta!

You can use Lulu as a short run printer. (Heck, long run if you want . . . at 1,000 copies and up they get bids on offset printing.)

It is not all black or white. There are shades of gray.
