Oh Boy, Where's The Joy?

By Lesley Hershman

I recently attended a writer's conference where the topic of finding the inspiration to write on a daily basis came up. One woman mentioned that she concentrates on the "joy and poetry" in her work every day, so I thought I'd look for those lovely sentiments in my writing too:

Oh, joy, I hear the unmistakable sound of the cat throwing up on the carpet

The very same one I just had professionally cleaned, I would quickly bet

I fear no more writing will be done today

Instead I will be on my hands and knees, scrubbing away.

Oh joy, there's no editor's terse rejection in today's mail!

No, wait; there is one, accidentally stuck inside a catalogue of tools for sale

The editor gave it a "doesn't suit our present needs" which means she thought it a bore

Which wounds my fragile writer's ego to its very core.

Oh joy, my computer has completely frozen once again,

I am forced to compose with an old fashioned pen

Now I find myself playing hangman and lazily doodling

I should be focusing on my two main characters falling in love and canoodling!

Oh joy, at the end of the day, I read over my story

And I can't pretend all is hunky dory

The characters are unlikable and flat,

The plot is clearly predictable right off the bat.

Oh joy, roses are often red, sometimes pink

Violets are pretty much always blue, I think.

If you can find joy and poetry every time you sit down to write,

I envy you with all my might.
