John McAfee, person of interest and faker of heart attacks.

To everyone that doesn't know the backstory, John McAfee (yes, the guy behind the anti-virus software) is currently in prison. He lives in Belize, and his neighbor was called, shot to be more precise. Being his neighbor and all, the police wanted to question him to see if he heard or saw anything suspicious recently. What was Mcafee's reaction? To attempt to flee the country. He ran to Guatemala and applied for asylum but they decided to try to deport him back to Belize.

The stress must have been too much, and he ended up have a heart attack. Or did he? No, no he didn't. In fact, he was posting on his blog when his supposed heart attack happened. Here's some more info:

McAfee, 67, had been in hiding for three weeks. He crossed into Guatemala with his girlfriend to evade authorities in Belize who wanted to quiz him as "a person of interest" about the killing of fellow American Gregory Faull.


"He entered the country illegally and we are going to seek his expulsion for this crime," Lopez Bonilla said. McAfee was detained by Guatemalan police and a member of Interpol at the Intercontinental hotel in Guatemala City.

Hm, yeah, I did jump the gun a bit and assumed since Guatemala turned down his asylum request, they were immediately kicking him out. After searching a bit more, I found some better articles (mainly by leaving out the fake heart attack thing in the search and just doing his name):

McAfee's lawyers said they planned to appeal the denial of asylum to Guatemala's constitutional court. The process could give the American expatriate another day or two in the country, and the court would have to issue a decision within 48 hours, the Associated Press said.

Belize police had expected McAfee to be flown back to that nation Thursday morning, police spokesman Raphael Martinez said. He said the police have been told there was a delay.

"It's just a wait-and-see now," Martinez said. "As soon as he is released, he will be escorted by [Guatemalan] authorities and he will be received at whatever border is determined. "He will then be taken into police custody for detention and questioning."

Throughout this saga, McAfee has been blogging. In a post Thursday titled "Urgent from John," he implored supporters to "please email the president of Guatemala and beg him to allow the court system to proceed, to determine my status in Guatemala."

At a hotel in Guatemala City on Wednesday night, just before authorities whisked him off in a black pickup truck, McAfee turned to a video camera, saying: "Guatemalan jails have beds, dude. And food. That's pretty awesome." The video was released by Vice magazine.

In a post from jail, McAfee said he had been provided "excellent coffee."

"I asked for a computer and one magically appeared," McAfee blogged from behind bars. He said his Guatemalan cell was "vastly superior" to Belize jails.

So, he's trying for a final appeal and his status will be known for sure in the next 48 hours. Though, minus some type of bribery, I don't see anyone giving him asylum when there seems to be a very legitimate reason for the Belize authorities to question him and they've given no indication that they plan to harm him.

As a side note in my quote, apparently Guatemala has much better prisons than Belize.

He looks to be in some serious trouble though. I can't speak to his guilt or innocence at all, obviously, but it smells bad imo.

Still, the "faker" moniker seems unfair at this point. He's in his late sixties and clearly under a great deal of pressure.

Well, the amount of effort required to get rid of the pre-installed McAfee shite they put into new computers is near criminal. But the "I'll flee to another country" when the cops come to have an interview to see if he's heard something when the neighbours were killed is sort of suspicious.

When I heard about the heart attack I thought it seemed a little too convenient.
