A publisher or agency using Google ads to solicit your novel probably isn't anyone you want to write for.

What's changed?

I was reading an old blog post from a literary agent (2010, I think) and he said that true crime in the 80's garnered larger advances but no royalties and that proposals have changed for true crime a great deal. He mentioned that many things included in a true crime proposal years ago are now obsolete but gave no details.
What could be the missing parts?
