Greetings from the Seventh Circle of Hell

Hello fellow creatures!
My name is Roman, I am from Germany (unfortunately) and it's a mighty big pleasure to join you nice folks.
On my quest to find a meaningful occupation in life I have now turned to writing after studying biology.

I was wondering if you guys are actually able to do your "own thing" for a living? So far I have often read that you are supposed to create value as an ebook author.
Value being in mosts cases defined as writing books on how to get money or how to be sucessful in blogging/marketing.

Currently I am writing a non-fiction book, actually more of an article collection, but I am worrying that nobody will see the value in that.

What have your experiences been with publishing stuff outside of the mainstream niches?
Any hope of finding monetary success or will I have to settle with prestige?

Cheers,

KoB

First-off - Welcome to AW!

As to your question ... This is just my opinion, but I don't think people write because of monetary incentives. Statistically speaking, none of us are likely to make as much money off writing as we would/do a traditional career (there are exceptions, of course). This include those of us who, in your words, write in "mainstream" genres.

From a lot of lurking (i.e. reading other people's posts), it seems that most people here, myself included, have a full-time job and are trying to squeeze in writing time whenever we can. The dream would be to make enough money off writing that the full-time job is no longer absolutely necesssary, but I don't see that happening to me any time soon .

And I don't think 'prestige' is the right word - I write in hopes that someone else will like my work enough to pay for what I wrote. I don't think I'll ever get famous of it.

Hi Roman. It took me a while to get to the 7th circle, because I took the 9th gate. Anyways, I'm here now and in my opinion, and from what I have experienced so far, is that you have to treat your story as a product or a franchise to some extent. You need not only to do research for the content of your non-fiction book, but also research to find out if there is a market for it. i would love to tell you that because there is an absence in the market for what you have to offer, that it would be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it's not always the case...there may be a reason why no one is going there. So in saying this, you may have to spitball your idea out there and see if people would think it worthwhile persuing.

All the best.

Yours in writing

Calvin M.

Welcome Roman.

Remember there's a direct door to heaven even in the seventh circle of hell.

They're all labels anyway my friend. Nothing more unfortunate in the 'German' label than any other one.
