Well, L and G, at least. So you've got Partners, which is terrible: the gay character is basically Jack from Will & Grace. I love a flamboyant gay person, but he's way way way way over the top. Also: there are other sorts of gay characters available! He is one of the two protagonists, in business with his straight guy BFF.
Then you've got The New Normal, which I have mixed feelings about. I don't love every message they are sending, but the characters feel really flawed and honest and true. The main characters are a moderately flamboyant gay guy, a nerdy gay doctor, and their straight lady friend who is going to donate her baby to them (and her weirdo young daughter). So, two mainstream shows with gay leading characters/themes.
Not gay shows, but doing a decent job:
There's a new MTV show called Underemployed, which is an ensemble cast of, err, 5 people? One, the narrator, is a nerdy Asian-American lesbian who gets turned out in the first episode by a "straight-looking" (I hate that phrase) African-American lawyer. Bonus points for not leaning on any tired stereotypes, at least in the pilot anyways.
And there is a lesbian in the ensemble cast of Bomb Girls, a historical about women working in a WW2 munitions factory.
And then you've got a handful of supporting gays in returning shows like Happy Endings (I love the dorky fat slob gay guy on this show), Modern Family, Grey's Anatomy, Glee, and Some Generic Legal Drama I Never Watch. On the one hand, I'm happy to see more representation on TV. On the other hand, where are all the characters from the rest of the QUILTBAG (B and T especially!)? And some of the portrayals are so ridiculous they are bordering on offensive.
What do you guys think? Progress? Not enough progress? Back to the drawing board?
