Sorry if there is a thread on this, I couldn't find it. I was just wondering what the rules, if any, were there about banning? Are there warnings first, or will certain behaviors get you automatically banned from a sub forum. Or is it all at the discretion of the mod(s) who witness the problem?

All of the above, really. Depending upon the egregiousness of the offense, it can earn a warning, a temporary ban, a ban from a sub-forum, or a permanent ban.

As to what gets folks in trouble: Our one rule is RYFW. Trolling and spamming are subsets of that.

Speaking from what i've seen since being a moderator: Unless the person is an outright spammer, there are always warnings beforehand, as well as discussion between the moderators as to the appropriate course of action.

There's also a lot that happens back channel that other AWers observing what's going on out front don't see.

There's invariably a lot of consultation between the mods on these cases. Banning and suspension are not automatic decisions, except in clear cases, such as spamming and plagiarism.

Only Supermods and Mac (and on rare occasions, Admins) can pull the ban switch. Regular mods don't have that kind of authority. If we see a problem, we'll bring it up for discussion among the other mods. Usually one or more of us will intervene on the person's behalf to try to salvage their membership and warn them against unacceptable behavior.

Unless the offense is highly egregious, no one ever suggests banning the person. We talk mostly about how best to resolve the member's issue before it gets too far out of hand.

You'd be surprised how tolerant mods can be and how protective most of us feel toward members. Usually, folks have to try really, really hard to be banned from this site; and when they try hard enough, they are readily accommodated.

Well the ban I am speaking of is a temp one in a sub forum only.

But thanks for your reply. I have a lot of respect for the mods here and haven't had too many issues. I already PM'd Mac. The whole subject has me confused, as I am hearing conflicting things.

Since this is about a particular member on the forum, I'm locking this thread, as discussing it here wouldn't be right. A PM to Mac would be the best course of action on this. :)
