Kindle books have no page numbers. That is why the table of content must be ACTIVE. In other words, names of chapters and sections should be clickable links.

I just learned how to publish a kindle book, according to this video

https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/help?ie=UTF8&topicId=A2M7MM0UP7PHK0

The book was uploaded in MSWORD.doc format and the draft pays well on my kindle reader. The only problem is that the table of content is not active.

Where can I learn about how to create an active table of content in MSWORD?

Thank you in advance,

I may be able to step you through it (or maybe not, it's not hard, but somewhat hard to explain).

First, what version of Word are you using?

Have you already created a table of contents using the Insert option, or have you just typed out a table? You can make an active table of contents if you've already just typed in the table, but it's probably easier to do it using Word automatic table of content insertion.

1) Thank you for the offer to help. I am using Word 2008 for Mac; it is said to be the same as Word 2007 for PC.

2) Here is what I did to produce the Table of Content (TOC):

a) The names of chapters, in my WORD manuscript, were styled as H1 and the names of sections were styled as H2.

b) I went the INSERT menu of MSWORD and select the "Index and Tables" option.

c) This brought the dialog in which I selected 2 for the number of levels, and unchecked the "Show page numbers." Then I selected the "Table of content" TAB and click the OK button.

d) The TOC was created, without page numbers, as I wanted.

e) The file was uploaded to kdp.amazon.com and they created the kindle file for it. I was able to read the draft of kindle but the TOC was not active.

3) Reading a kindle book without an active TOC makes no sense.

What did I do wrong?

Offhand, it looks like you did everything right if it went ahead and created the table with the correct headings.

I'm not familiar with the Word to Kindle process, so I can't really help you if there's something special you have to do on that end. I'm assuming it goes ahead and makes the document view "web layout" (this will make active links more obvious to anyone viewing the table).

After you put the table in the Word document, was the table active in the document itself? That is, clickable hyperlinks? If not, you may have that option turned off. Look for an option in Tools > Edit to NOT use ctrl + click to click a hyperlink. If this was turn on, then just clicking a line in the table wouldn't work (someone would have to hold ctrl down when they clicked to make it work), and probably wouldn't work when it was put on Kindle. You might also want to make sure you have "web view" selected in the document before you upload it to Amazon (I'm not sure whether that would make a difference or not).

Thanks again, Alleycat. I will contact the kindle support team. And I will post the description of the process, if it works.

You probably want to make sure the table is active (clickable) on your document itself first. If it works on the document it should work when you upload it to Kindle (but again, I'm no expert on that part of the process).

I said "Tools > Edit" earlier, I actually meant Tools > Options > Edit (tab) > uncheck "use CTRL + click to follow hyperlink" box if it's checked. I was going by memory earlier.

This could be slightly different in your version of Word.

"Web view" will not make any difference. Word's "Views" are just that -- different ways of viewing in Word. In the end. only Print View matters.

And that means your choice of font may matter more than you think. I don't know how it is with the reader toys (I see there have been various jailbreak and font hacks for them!), but I have tried Kindle for PC and found it horrible. Eyestraining serif font on glaring white with no options but size. With my eyes, size isn't the only thing that matters, and one paragraph per "page" also sucks. I haven't tried it yet myself, but since I have been experimenting with e-book formats, I will make some Kindle test books soon. There is a converter I want to try out too.

1) The Table of Content is active is MSWORD, if I do not remove page numbers. In that case I click on dotted line segments (leading to page numbers), in order to jump to a chapter or section.

2) I tried something else, while waiting to a rely from amazon's customer's service. That say that a book can be submitted as an html file. I composed such sample file (see below) and uploaded it to Kindle. They converted it into a draft of a kindle book and I read it. The Table of Content, and the text below it, were displayed but the TOC was not active.

Opening the same file in a browser, however, did produce an active TOC, as anyone can verify.

<P>
This personal history traces my evolution from a dedicated Stalinist in Poland to an active anti-Stalinist in the USA.
Affairs of the heart and scientific preoccupations are not totally ignored. Spanning the years between 1946 and 2008,
this story is based mostly on diaries stored in an old green metal trunk. In late 2009 I finally decided to open the
green coffer. Up to then, I had never re-read the diaries. The total volume of the diaries was approximately three
cubic feet.
</P><P>
One thing became clear as soon as I started reading. The original plan, translating everything, made no sense,
considering poor composition, numerous repetitions and too many details, for example, related to my scientific work.
But I began to see the trajectory of my life more clearly, and decided that there was enough substance to be of
interest to others. Fortunately, my wife Linda is helping me in the difficult task of editing this pile of papers.
"Are you going to be embarrassed to read descriptions of episodes from my sexual life?î I asked. The answer was "we
are senior citizens now."

Something is wrong, but I'm not sure what. The headings themselves should be clickable if the table has been put in correctly and "CRTL+click" is turned off. Not putting in page number shouldn't have a difference.
