Forbes - America's Most Miserable Cities

Story here. Summary slideshow here.
Quote:
Our Misery Measure takes into account unemployment, as well as eight other issues that cause people anguish. The metrics include taxes (both sales and income), commute times, violent crime and how its pro sports teams have fared over the past two years. We also factored in two indexes put together by Portland, Ore., researcher Bert Sperling that gauge weather and Superfund pollution sites. Lastly we considered corruption based on convictions of public officials in each area as tracked by the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Department of Justice.
The Top 10:
01. Cleveland, Ohio
02. Stockton, California
03. Memphis, Tennessee
04. Detroit, Michigan
05. Flint, Michigan
06. Miami, Florida
07. St. Louis, Missouri
08. Buffalo, NY
09. Canton, OH
10. Chicago, Illinois

Memphis was very scary decades ago. We got their news when I lived in TN not far away. Awesome barbeque, though

Chicago?! Chicago's amazing!

Then again, I know Michigan Ave and Lincoln Park a lot better than I know Cabrini Green.

I know Memphis has awful poverty but it's also a mecca of American music, as much as Nashville and New Orleans. I always thought a tour of the Sun and Stax/Volt studios would be a dream weekend, but I'm weird. Still, I've never been there - been to Cleveland and Miami and they're both quirky and cool in their own way.

No, Chicago is terrible. I've lived here most of my life in various neighborhoods and hold no illusions about it. I wish it wasn't, but look at the facts.

It's not just the murder rate or the bad neighborhoods, but things like having the highest sales tax in the nation (10.25%), a mismanaged public transit system that constantly cuts service and raises rates while being infamously unreliable, a terrible showing for our public school system, traffic congestion on par with the worst coastal cities, high unemployment, high costs of utilities/rentals/taxes while having a lower quality of living than cheaper areas, etc., etc. Not to mention notorious corruption at all levels of government.

Compare this to smaller urban centers in the region like Milwaukee, Madison, St. Paul, Minneapolis, etc.

Forbes has been doing this list for a while, and Chicago has been on it at least twice, if not more.

Sad but true.

Eh, it's a hell of a lot of fun to visit for a long weekend though - which, I grant, is a different story. Especially when your host has an apartment on the 20th floor, just off Lake Shore Drive. Changes the perspective!

That was exactly what I thought about Memphis. When my husband and I drove across the States in 2003, I was excited as hell to visit Memphis. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be a shithole. Even Graceland lost a lot of its charm once I saw the area surrounding it. If I never go back to that city, it'll be too soon.

Sorry, on another forum I moderate, we have a forum specifically for the purpose of having every second thread be a place to post whatever inane list Forbes comes up with for cities. I now have a gag reflex when it comes to Forbes list.

I enjoyed parts of Memphis (we took our dog to the vet there and shopped and things). But parts of our car were stolen literally every time we parked in the city.

So visit, but get a ride And be careful where you go.

I love New Orleans, too, but the violence has always been a reason it can't be a top city. Sad but true for me.

I've been to two of those cities many times, the most recent trips within the last 3 months, and both Cleveland and Buffalo are indeed in dire shape. Mile after mile of abandoned houses, many vandalized, others just boarded up and tagged with FORECLOSED or F--- YOU and the name of a bank or lender. More vacant stores, empty spots at poorly maintained shopping malls, hotels and restaurants with no crowds, poorly attended concerts and sporting events, and all the other signs that the spending money simply is not there.

The despair is palpable.

It's going to take a long time and a lot of jobs for recovery in those cities.

Maryn, glad her city did not take a hit

I object. I'm sitting here on the Group W bench between Detroit and Flint and I am quite sure Motown deserves a higher ranking of low-downess. I'd knock Stockton down a couple pegs by virtue of it being in California, where at least you can get to the ocean and calm your soul with kick-ass sunsets. Granted I've never been there, so my guage of despair may need to be re-calibrated.

Stockton is a cesspool. They have around a 25% unemployment rate along with numerous gangs and drug violence spilling into the streets. Highschools are extremely dangerous to attend there and many families who can afford to have moved them to home school or transfered to different districts.

Seconded. Grim place, and has been for a long time, long before the current economic problems. I lived in the East Bay (Concord) in the mid 1980s, and quickly learned that if you were going to drive east toward the Sierras, you really just wanted to see Stockton behind you, or avoid it altogether. I'm not quite sure what makes it so dismal. Even among Valley towns, which can be rather bleak as a whole, it stands out for awfulness.

And Magdalen: Stockton ain't nowhere near no beach.
