What you have interpreted as an "ideal" was not stated as such. It was asserted to be a current state or condition:

"There is no such thing at "too much" freedom of speech." - James

Unfortunately for the veracity of that statement, legally in this country there IS such a thing. And, that's the point the discussion, at that time, was focusing on; whether or not the situation with the idiot losing his job was a "free speech" issue in terms of its legality.

As a universal ideal, it is also flawed as society, as a whole, has shown its unwillingness to allow certain types of speech. History has shown that total, unrestrained, unabashed freedom of speech ("too much") is neither desirable nor conducive to a flourishing society.

How many great leaders would have been viciously and needlessly ruined by outright lies and seditious speech were it not for society's intolerance for libel, slander, and sedition?

How many criminals would go free if perjury were not a crime? How many more crimes would then be committed?

Those terms do, indeed, dispute the desirability of your so-called "ideal."

I used "child pornography" as one of several examples. It seems to be the only one you could somewhat counter. However, if your only qualm with it is the statutory rape issue, then I'm sure I'll see you lobbying for child porn to be made legally acceptable in states where the legal age of sexual consent is below 18 and legally available to people under the age of 18.

There was no "innappropriate hyperbole" in my argument. There are deeper issues to the legality of child porn than statutory rape. And, as I've said, what is statutory in one state is not in another. Is the child porn still okay in the state where legal age of consent is 16?

There answer is "no."

You can plainly see from the quote in my original post that my comment was directed at James. And, yes, by erroneously claiming that my "example" "holds no water" and snidely putting "example" in parentheses, you didn't directly insult me, but you were a bit of a smart a$$.

Usually I find that an attractive quality in a woman, but for some reason it rubbed me the wrong way this time.
