After a solid year of writing, recording, mixing, mastering, banging my head against the wall, re-recording, re-recording, etc. etc. I finally have a finished album of which I'm pretty darned proud. The Beautiful Grandeur Inside is now available at CDBaby and will soon be on iTunes and Amazon.com. You can preview the songs, download MP3's, and order CD's on CDBaby. Some full songs can be previewed on my MySpace Music page.

The album features twelve songs, three of which are instrumentals. Lyrics to all the songs are available on my website. The entire album has an AW flavour. The song Ka'imi was written for auntybug and based loosely on her story. The song Cosmic Boy was written by AW's own KTC. And the song Train of Thought was written for ToT.

Anyway, I'm excited and terrified as with any artistic endeavor, which is actually the double-meaning of the album title. It's from a line in one of the songs - "Maybe the beautiful grandeur inside would crumble to dust if exposed to the light." I guess that's how most artists feel.

Thanks for letting me share and I hope you enjoy the music.

I've been fortunate enough to be in possession of the album for a few weeks now. I LOVE it. Super job, Jay. Impeccable. It's been getting a huge workout on my MP3. (-;

This is fantastic news, Jay. I am SO looking forward to having it and listening to it.

I'm going to buy a cigarette lighter so I can put on the CD, wave my lighter in the air and get that Frampton vibe. I jest, only a little.

This news makes me very happy. Well done, man.

Quick update - the album is now available on iTunes. It took a few weeks (in case anyone else is considering using CDBaby and wonders how long it takes). I've heard from many people that they only music through iTunes so I probably should have waited until it was up there to announce it, but patience isn't one of my strong suits. Anyway, thanks to everyone for your support - it means the world to me.

I'm listening to the album right now. :)

Leon ... nice sixties vibe, juxtaposed with a very modern lead guitar. Cool.

Candyland Quicksand ... LOVE the groove in this tune. I'm really not a fan of rapping, but here the counterpoint between it and the smooth harmonies in the chorus works beautifully. I especially dig the keyboard-ish guitar riff leading into the full solo. Well thought out and executed, Jay.

The Solitary Man ... a mood change at an appropriate spot. Pretty song.

I Do ... he do play rockin' guitar. Instrumental with balls-out soloing.

Ka'imi ... and he plays acoustic too! ;) Made me want to pick up my guitar and play and sing along.

Train of Thought ... another instrumental. Way cool bounce between crushing raunch and jazzy clean soloing.

Jimmy & Winnie
... head on out to Route 66 and crank this one up with the top down.

Together Well ... you can float away on this one. Vocals are a bit reminiscent of Crosby Stills Nash & that other Young.

Go On and Crush Me ... I love moody songs, and this one definitely fits the bill. Lovely harmony guitar solo outro.

The Deserts of Mergatroid ... another cool instrumental.

Cosmic Boy ... goes-to-eleven guitar sound without overwhelming the tune. Rockin'!

All Alone With You ... there were other songs here I thought would have made for a good finish to the album, but when this one arrived I realized it was the perfect song to wrap things up.

Really good job, Jay. If there's any critique I could offer, it would be on the technical end ... I thought the lead vocals could have been a touch more forward in the mix at times, but that's about it. I've bought major label releases I enjoyed far less than your work here. Kudos, my friend.

God bless you, Charlie. I'm truly flattered and touched by your comments/review. There are so many decisions that go into making an album, from tone choice to mixing and panning to intros/outtros to song order to lyrcs to execution to vocal styling to minimalization/overload; a lot of which people don't think about or notice, so it's especially neat when someone appreciates the decisions and execution. Song order in particular is one thing I obsess over to an unhealthy degree!

Three songs into this album, and I'm stunned. I thought it would be good, but no. It is SERIOUSLY good.

I'm not all that fond of saying "he sounds like so-and-so", but this is clean, warm, eclectic, passionate music - there's a thrilling dichotomy between the buoyant energy, the way Public Image Ltd worked in the mid-to-late 80's (the propulsive, sunny beat, but without the Lydon shriek) and a sort of warm distance in the vocals, the way Bob Mould and Hüsker Dü sounded.

This is rich, powerful, well-played, thoughtful, and moving music.

I'm going to wear this album out, and I'm going to recommend it.

Congratulations, Jay, man. I'm delighted for you. And thank you for sharing it with us.

AW. A very nice place!
... cool!
Neat titles too, particularly 'Solitary Man.'
I will flatter myself that that one is about me :)
