Here are six (6) agents and their websites that I've culled from Jeff Herman's 2008 agent book.

Thanks to the Internet, anyone can create a website and I notice many/most agents list their clients. HOWEVER...I see laundry lists of authors and titles I've never heard of and often no pub date or publishing house.

So, I've looked at the index here and found nothing about these folks. So I'm just curious if anyone knows anything about them other than what I've already read at their websites? Any personal information or insights?

I'm going to assume that they are all legit--but are they any "good?"

Thanks in advance--and I really hope they aren't on the index `cuz I checked several times!

They are listed on Preditors and Editors.

Bookmark that site and use it to check out names.

Another ploy is put the agent's name in your search engine with "scam" or "ripoff" next to it and see if anything pops up. Do this with publishers, too.

NEVER ever pay to have any agent read your stuff. An agent who is also a "Book Doctor" has a strong monetary reason to find fault with it, that he can--for more money--fix.

Just because an author, title, or publisher isn't on AW doesn't mean they're not legit. Thanks to the next you can track them down on Google and Amazon, ditto for their publishers.

AW forums are a good tool, but not the only one for checking things out!

As for whether they're good or not, you can ask about their recent sales. Legit agents are happy to provide info if they have the time.

Otherwise---find writers who have books like yours, e-mail, and ask who represents them. Most are willing to help out an aspiring newbie.
