A blogger I know forwarded me a spam he got today. It's from an outfit called World of Art/Masters of Today, run by one Peter or Petru Russu, and it targets visual artists who want to get published. None of their enterprises will surprise people who are familiar with scams aimed at writers.

So far I've identified several operations. Masters of Today offers a wide range of publishing services, including "contract publishing." They also sell space in commercial artists' display books. (Note: commercial artists' display books are a real thing, but some are a lot less real than others.) Artists of Today charges US$1,290/Euro$990 for a two-page color spread. Masters of Today is US$272/Euro$215 per page, but has a much smaller print run. Their catalog is US$189/Euro$149 per color page and US$129/Euro$102 for b&w pages. All these publications are distributed via Ingram plus the usual list, more or less.

Art Addiction is a visual arts online display site. They call themselves a medial museum. Here are their terms. Material is organized into contests, of which they appear to have a dozen or so running at any given time. (I opened the directory for one of these contests. It had 436 artists listed in it.) If your submission passes the free initial screening, you're allowed to submit four works for US$60/Euro$50, plus US$10/Euro$9 for each additional work, for a maximum of 12 works. Contest winners get a free two-page spread in one of the display books.

The operation's central site appears to be Worldofartmagazine.com, whose interface is even more irritating than Tinyhorn Press's main page. They run art contests. This site appears to have reproduced WOA's press release verbatim. Asbjorn Lonvig is one of their winners. Lonvig's work would be very creditable in a community college art program. Evelynn Eighmey entered and got a World of Art Award, which entitled her to one year's online display, plus the chance to pay money to be included in a printed display book.

The following exchange appeared on Rhizome, which is a legit art website:

I submitted to a call posted on Rizome and recieved email that I had recieved an award which included on line gallery placement for a year. Soon after this notice I recieved email regarding participation in an art book, this time a $ contribution was required. Does anyone know the publisher Peter Russu? or the publication World of Art Magazine?

My advice: never pay to play.
PS, never heard of World of Art Mag but their web site is horrible:

Take a look at their book, "Art Addiction: 100 Contemporary Artists". It reeks of "I shelled out $500 to be in this book." They didn't even bother to correct spelling or grammar mistakes.
Finally, here's the spam my friend received today. Full headers are available upon request:

It's only logical that artists should get hit with these too.
