Dave Arneson, one of the co-founders of Dungeons and Dragons and TSR passed away on 07 Apr 2009. Dave was quite literally the godfather of gaming as he was the one who came up with the idea for converting table top gaming with squads and platoons and having one character run by one player. He also developed the first RPG campaign Blackmoor which was still running at the time of his death.
Dave was never the flashy face of TSR. He seemed content to let Gary get the praise (and the brickbats). Still he was extremely gracious when I met him at Dragon*Con in 2002.
I think it's safe to say gaming (video, on-line and face-to-face) can trace their existance back to Dave's simple idea.
May you always make your saving throws in your new campaign, Dave.
RIP.
For another take on Dave's influence, I recommend This episode of "The Order of the Stick
