Every genre has its stigmas

SF/F: Nerds only

Romance: 40yr old shut ins

Horror: creepy, greasy haired emos

Suspense/Mystery: old people

Don't sweat it. Many great books and writers were never taken seriously in their time.

Nowadays, though, a lot of people seem to equate writing fantasy with Rowling$$$$$$$$$$$.

I've gotten a few weird looks when I've mentioned to people that I write fantasy. Most people only have as reference the cultural touchstones like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, and since I've written both epic fantasy and contemporary fantasy, I usually compare my work to those two. It's easier on me that way because people actually know what I'm talking about. Even my parents don't know what I'm talking about if I bring up authors like Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, and Patrick Rothfuss, even though they are some of the most popular in the fantasy genre.

Well, from the looks of it, every genre has it's own stigma about it.

I mean as long as you're enjoying what you're writing and you're proud of your work, I really wouldn't think it matters.

If you enjoy the genre you're writing, keep writing it.

If you want to try something else, go for it.

Do what you want to do. :)
