Welcome to the boyname battle. We are currently engaged ourselves, although we have 5 more months to sort it out. Anyway, the front runners are Shawn, Michael, James (but only as a middle name, apparently), Thomas, and Christopher.

Our last name is kinda odd, but if it were different I would like to name him David, Alexander, or maybe Joshua or Jeremy or Andrew.

For a real treat, check out the site "baby's called a bad bad thing." Highly addictive, insanely funny, and all utterly true. What's a real hoot are the parents (?) defending their right to call their child some horrible thing like "Bigger Dieks Johnson" or something. Seriously funny stuff.

You know, how the first name goes with the last name matters. Those who need boy names, can you give us a pronunciation guide to your last names? (I assume many people are not at ease giving out their real names, same as me.)

Like my maiden name was da-DA-da, and my married name is DA-da. Can you guide us that way?

Maryn, whose real name is DA-da DA-da, which works okay

Gravity, out daughter recently started a temp job in which she deals with a lot of forms and sees all kinds of names. The worst one so far is a baby girl named Latrina. I know not everybody knows the word 'latrine,' but man...

Sebastian (martial arts lessons required, perhaps, but that's fine)

Whatever you do, don't include any apostraphes or hyphens. Scantron was not made for such things.

Some of these have probably been mentioned in the posts above. :) But, if all else fails, you can always opt for Beetelgeuse. ;)

Excellent point about the emPHAsis.

Since my and my daugher's names will be published in an upcoming article, I guess there's no harm in telling you her name to show how I know this. My husband wanted to name our first daughter Isabel. Unfortunately, our last name is Businelle (BOO-sin-ell). Say it with me, Class: Isabel Businelle. As in Thumbelina Ballerina. As in Dr. Seuss. As in Saturday morning cartoonish. Yet we ended up with Ariel Businelle. Same last syllable, totally different sound.

Hmm, Ariel's technically a Jewish boy's name, by the way. How 'bout that one?

Thanks, everyone. As for emphasis, the last name is DA-da-da and begins with a hard C.

You've named a bunch that I like, but my husband pretty much shakes his head at everything. We've got a list of three possibilities, but I'm not sure if I love any of them:

Nathan (I love Nathaniel, and I love Nate, but Nathan is just meh)
Quentin
Jonas

Those are some sweet names. Here's my serious suggestion:

What about Heath? It's a good strong name and a tip of the hat to literature is always appreciated.

I will complete a play this year! I will!
My all-time favourite boys name in the world (and the name we were going to give our second if she had been a he) is Declan. It's beautiful.

I also like Jack (which was the name we were going to give our first if she had been a he)!

Hey You also works fine until he's ready for school...

I'm not one to be too helpful. Our daughter's name is Solas Nialidhe Tyr. Tyr is for the Norse god of athletes and underdogs. Solas was conceived the night the Sox won the World Series...I felt it was the least I could do for the deity. It may have been a mistake, though. I gave birth to a Norse god-ish little girl.

I love the name Heath. Love it. Husband rolled his eyes. I also like Asher. Again -- eye rolls.

It wouldn't be so bad if he suggested names in return.

Our baby is set to arrive in six months, and if it turns out to be a boy, we have already come up with a name, which has been suggested here several times by the way. :D

Really great names for boys are sparse I think, especially since we want one that is pronounced the same in English and Danish. We have come up with four girl names but only one for a boy. It's a great one, though, we thinks.

I love the names Maxwell and Samuel for a boy, and I really love their shortened versions. I always have to think about what nicknames will be, because I hate the nickname for my name. I'm Tamara, and everyone wants to call me Tammy. I put a stop to that one really quick.

Anyway, if Tessa had been a boy, she was going to be either Maxwell Thomas or Samuel Thomas.
